Transfer from Kobo Touch to Kindle App

I am very new to Calibre and this forum and e-readers so hope this is the correct forum.

I have downloaded Calibre and connected my Kobo which the software recognises. But (note I am an ageing non techie) despite reading instructions which appear simple, I am unable to work out how to proceed any further to transfer books from my Kobo Touch to a Kindle App.

Can anyone explain in non-technical words of one or two syllables how I continue. Yes, I know it's probably sooo easy but . . . .

When I click "Add Books" I get a box headed "Computer>KOBOereader but no list of book. Obviously I'm missing something

Help required, PLEASE!

It depends on the type of book on the Kobo. And where the Kindle App is.

Firstly, you can add a book from the device to calibre. With the device connected, go to the device list and find the book you want to add. Select and right click on them and select "Add to library". Calibre will copy the book from the device to the library.

There are two problems with this. One, is DRM and the other is kepubs. If the books have DRM, adding to the calibre library won't help unless you remove this as well. And "kepub" is Kobo's format and uses their DRM. A kepub will probably get added to calibre as an epub unless it has DRM. In that case, I don't think it will get added (it's been a while since I tried).

To get to the Kindle app depends on where it is. If it is on an iPad or iPhone, you need the iOS reader applications. It will allow you to send to the Kindle app. I haven't dealt with Android, so I don't know how it works.

Many hanks for your response, davidfor. This appears to be the problem. When I connect my Kobo Touch to the laptop, Calibre recognises the device but there are no books listed.

One thing I have realised which may or may not be relevant, is that under Kobo on My Computer, the books on the Kobo are not listed. Presumably they should be?

To answer your query, I am hoping to transfer books purchased from Kobo from the Kobo Touch to the Kindle App on my Apple iPad Mini.

I would really appreciate any further help you can offer.

If the books were downloaded to your Kobo Touch directly or added using the Kobo desktop then they are in Kobo's kePub format (these can be converted, but it's more complicated). The easiest would be to go to your library on the Kobo website and see if there are separate ePub downloads available for your books (most books at Kobo have this option). These ePub's can then be added to Calibre and converted for use with the Kindle app.

NOTE: If the books have DRM applied (downloaded using Adobe Digital Editions) then that would have to be removed before any conversion would be possible. We can't discuss details of DRM removal here, but Googling Apprentice Alf will get you started.

The easier option of course would be to install the Kobo app on your iPad and use that to read your Kobo purchases.

That's a bit strange. The driver should be getting the list of all books on the device. It doesn't matter if they were sideloaded or downloaded from Kobo. Are you looking at the device list to make sure? Or was there any errors during the sync?

As AneamicOak said, that depends on the books. Kobo downloads their books to the directory ".kobo\kepub". If that is empty, there are no purchased kepubs. Sideloaded books go elsewhere. If you use ADE, they are under the "Digital Editions" directory. If you manually sideload, the could be anywhere. From calibre, there is usually a directory for each author, but that can be changed.

Again as AneamicOak said, you can use the Kobo app. To get into the Kindle app, the books will need to have DRM removed and then converted to another format. That is a little problem for purchased kepubs. But, the Kobo app works and will sync the reading status between the iPad and the Touch. If you install the app, login and wait a little bit, all the books will just appear.

Here I am again! I promise not to keep this thread going much longer - you must be bored!

Many thanks to davidfor and AnemicOak. I have connected the Kobo which Calibre recognises and having clicked Device>Show books in the main memory, the books are listed on Calibre. Progress?

So what is the next step, please.

No, you are not missing anything. The books you have on the device are kepubs downloaded from Kobo's servers. While a kepub is basically an epub with some extra tags, they use different DRM method. Adding these to calibre is pointless as it has no way to handle these books. It can't open them to read, and putting them back on the device doesn't work. But, there is a DRM removal method out there called "obok".

The best way to handle these books is to go to the Kobo web site and your library. This will list all of these books. For most of them, there will be a download link. Some will have "Download epub" which means the books do not have DRM. The rest will probably have "Adobe DRM". You will need ADE to download these books. Before these can be added to calibre, the DRM needs to be removed. For this, search for "apprentice alf".

Once the books are in calibre, you should be able to convert them to the appropriate format send them to the Kindle app. I don't use this, so I am not completely sure how to do this.

Despite all your help - and patience - I am admitting defeat.

I am trying to move slowly into the 21st Century having acquired an iPad and Kobo, but think we I will now read books on the Kobo and my wife read books on the iPad - and 'never the twain shall meet'!

But thanks again everyone.
