Will Calibre be able to take care of this?

Calibre doesn't remove DRM. If you mean certain third party plug-ins you'd have to ask where those are provided. Being that the watermark doesn't prevent the use of the book, AFAIK, I'm not sure how much interest there will be on removing it.

Since the publisher is confident the digimarc will remain even with a file conversion, and since it could trace back to the original purchaser, I'm thinking someone involved with Calibre may want to check it out properly and find a method to remove the digimarc.

Otherwise, it will make posting their titles too risky.

You mean illegally posting books? Most of the plug-in developers I know of frown on that activity.

Once again, Calibre doesn't remove DRM. Certain third-party plug-ins do.

It won't be an issue.

What Torrent Freak missed was that in this situation the digital watermarks will only be able to identify the ebook retailer that sold the file, not the person who bought it. And since this is not an encryption type of DRM but instead closer akin to metadata, there's no need to remove it.

The digital watermark DRM is being used to secure the supply chain. How exactly that is going to help, I do not know.

Most ebook retailers already use encryption DRM like Adobe, Kindle, iBooks, so I don't see how this effort will make it more secure.

Actually, TF did mention it.

But yeah, this is really a non-issue.

I believe what they're trying to identify is when ebooks show up on torrents before they're available for sale. In that case it's obviously been leaked in their supply chain but they currently don't know where.

Seems odd since Digital media can be moved in seconds/minutes, Unlike the Dead Tree version which needs to ship days/weeks in advance.

Why is there anything IN the supply chain before release date?

I guess that depends on what they define as the supply chain. I'm sure there are versions flying around for editing and proofing. The print runs would all be generated from digital copies long before the ebook is released. They probably send out copies for reviewers to read so they can write the blurbs.

I'm just going by what was quoted:

Quote:
Speaking with TorrentFreak, HarperCollins said that tracking these pre-consumer leaks provides intelligence to prevent them happening again.

“We have had leaks in the past in the final stages of our supply chain – via isolated instances of early releases by retailers. We therefore intend to be able to track these potential leaks in the future – especially now that our digital supply chain extends to many partners in many markets,” a spokesperson said.

“[The system] empowers us to go back to the source of the problem (ie identify the source) and find solutions to prevent this from happening in the future.”
It doesn't seem to be directed at watermarking consumer purchases.

I don't think it was explained clearly.

And I really don't think it's a serious issue either.

I hope this is not the watermarking system that actually changes the author's text.
