Cannot install updates
I am running Calibre (64-bit), version 1.43. Windows 7 (64-bit) home version, or whatever it is called.
I have tried to install updates several times, but I get a message like the following: (I think I have attached the screen shot). The gist of the message is that Calibre thinks another installation is in progress and wants that to finish before it will continue. Does anyone have any ideas on what may be going on? I like the program and mainly use it for conversion from EPUM to MOBI format. Thanks for any help! |

@Juan: Can I assume you've restarted at least once?

Several times. I have shut down my computer completely, waited a few minutes and then restarted. Still the same thing.

I've been having problems with the 2.1 installer.
Not your issue, mine would pretend that it was installing 2.0 despite that I clearly downloaded 2.1. See this thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...40#post2909840 How I resolved the issue is to use a vpn to download the current installer and that installed properly. If that's outside your area of technical proficiency you can download the 2.0 installer from here: http://download.calibre-ebook.com/2....4bit-2.0.0.msi 2.0 works fine. |

If you had followed the links in that MS Answers link I posted you would have arrived at this one ==>> Fix for Windows Error 1500: Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before continuing this one. (← click) I'm pretty sure if you follow the procedure in that blog item you'll be OK. Most often this error is caused by a power out, or a BSOD at the exact wrong moment whilst something is installing. BR |

When I came out of Safe Mode and rebooted normally, I tried the install again. This time it looked like it was going to work. However it gave me some kind of message about Visual Studio 2010 Shell not being completed and tried to roll back. Since it kept looping to the roll-back option I had to end the program with the Task Manager. Oddly enough, when I started Calibre, lo!, it said I had version 2.1.0. So I guess that worked. I then went to the last link to indicated to see what I could find, but I never found the Windows\Installer\InProgress key that he references. So I am guessing that whatever combination of what I did shook it out of its vicious cycle. I wish Microsoft would fix it to where various software would "play nice" with each other. What really annoys me is when Windows decides to update itself and does not indicate that is what is going on. That has caused me several problems of late. It may have caused this problem. Anyway, you seem to have pointed me in the right direction. Thank you all for your help. At least Calibre is well-behaved. It performs as advertised. I have been much pleased with it and will have to donate more to support it. Thanks again! Cheers! Allen, aka JuanFlacco Last edited by JuanFlacco; 08-30-2014 at 01:11 AM. |

@JuanFlacco - I 'hoped' you would use the process that most people said worked for them, never mind you got there.
You can manage Windows Update in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Update\Change settings. If you set Important Updates to Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them then you will control when to do the downloads, you will control when to install them and you will control when to do an necessary restart. For Windows issues I find the ==>> Windows 7 Help Forums quite good. The tutorials section often contains the answer I need. BR |
