Need Kobo desktop for Snow Leopad (Touch)
I purchased a factory reset Kobo Touch (N905B). According to the unit (when I turn it on) I need to setup the device using Kobo Desktop. I am running Snow Leopard (OSX V10.6). The current version of the software only supports Lion (OSX v10.7).
Touch firmware is 1.9.13 (r33944, 10/19/11) I have not been able to find a way to get this unit to accept any new books. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

You would think I'd learn to check for more posts when I get distracted when writing a response...
That will work but will not get you logged into the device. That is something the desktop application does, or the newer firmware/devices do over WiFi. Now back to my original and still mainly pertinent post... The simplest thing is probably to find someone with a machine that will run the desktop application. But, depending on where you are, that might not be practical. You could try downloading a firmware upgrade package and manually putting it on the device. When you disconnect, the firmware will be installed. And I am pretty sure the later versions will allow you to setup the Touch without a PC. See https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=185660 for the download links and the instructions for installing. Make sure you get the "Mark 3" firmware package. There is also a method to create a dummy user which gets you through the setup. But, this is not useful if you are buying books from Kobo. This also needs you to manually upgrade the firmware. Hi David. Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, that is an option. Naturally I wanted to see if I could get the eReader going sooner. Purchasing a used Touch has been a frustrating experience.
So, I am currently upgrading to v3.0.0 (mark 3 version). The unit is up and running again. This time it is automatically downloading the latest firmware via the internet (wifi connection). |

Good to hear it is running OK. The need for the desktop app for older devices is annoying. The newer firmware allows all the setup to be done over the WiFi. Did it prompt you to login after installing 3.0.0?

Yes I had to login, but I already had a Kobo account.
Now to find out if I can customize the kobo. I'd like to change the home screen layout, and add custom sleep and device off screens. Thanks for the help David. Time for me to go to bed. Cheers. |

The tiles on the home screen change as you do things. In general, as you open books, the browser, games etc. they appear on the home screen and push the others of. You can remove most tiles with a long press and choosing "Dismiss" from the menu. If you are a calibre user, my Kobo Utilities plugin has a function to dismiss some of the tiles and prevent them from coming back.
And I outline the basic UI standards in https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho....php?p=2772640. |
