Nancy Drew - What's the difference?

OK, ladies! Help an old bachelor out!

I am going to buy some Nancy Drew books for some young girls.

I see that there are three types - Nancy Drew, Nancy Drew Diaries and Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew.

I imagine that there is a difference between the three series. What is it? Any recommendations?

Thanks!

I'd guess that Nancy Drew are the original books that came out around the same time as the Hardy Boys books did. I remember them being out when I was a kid in a blue hard cover binding. My local library back then had both series.

You might find this to be of use:

List of Nancy Drew Books on Wikipedia - also describes some of the characteristics of each series. Doesn't say much about the Clue Crew books in terms of specifics, but everything else is pretty well covered.

Also - Nancy Drew main article - gives you an idea of how the character's depiction changed over the years.

Even though I got rid of the vast majority of my paper books, I kept a complete collection of the original series of hardcover Hardy Boys books I got from Costco some years back. Soon, they'll be going to my grandson.

Wonder what ever happened to my old Nancy Drew books? I'm betting one of my siblings stole them from my parents' house and sold them... 'cause they ain't there any more!

A mystery for The Hardy boys and Ms. Drew if ever I heard of one. Seriously if something like that happened to me I'd be upset. Of course I don't have any siblings so I'm safe there at least.

Go for the Nancy Drew books, not the diaries and not the Clue Crew. Start them off with the books that started the series off.

Both the Nancy Drew books and the Hardy Boys books were extensively revised/rewritten beginning in the late 1950s, so if you really want the original books, you can only get them on the secondary market. Applewood Books published facsimile editions of original Nancy Drew books, but even those are out of print, as far as I know.

Personally, I much prefer Judy Bolton and Cherry Ames!

I loved the Nancy Drew series as a young girl. I'm sure the books contributed to my lifelong enjoyment of mysteries. What age group are the young girls? Those series are targeted at different ages. You can find out more at this webpage.

The Clue Crew books feature an 8-year old Nancy & her friends so they are meant for younger readers.

The Nancy Drew Diaries are meant for the 8-12 age group.

Thanks for your contributions, guys and gals!

There will be perhaps a dozen girls younger than 13, so I will want to buy a book appropriate to the age of each.

I'll study the links you suggest, and get back if I have any more questions.

I found a few things on sale over the weekend, so this is what I've ordered. My plan is to break the boxes open, and give each girl one book.

Cherry Ames books 9-12 - $12.58
http://www.amazon.com/Cherry-Nursing...ds=cherry+ames

(I see that the price is $19 higher today!)

*****

Nancy Drew books 1-5 - $17.38 + $3.99
http://www.amazon.com/Nancy-Drew-Sta...ew+starter+set

*****

Cherry Ames, books 1-4 - $19.49 + $3.99
http://www.amazon.com/Cherry-Boxed-B...ames+boxed+set

So that comes to 13 books for $57.43, or $4.42 each.
