The Path Between the Seas: The Creation of the Panama Canal, 1870-1914 by David McCullough Amazon.ca is 2.99
From Amazon On December 31, 1999, after nearly a century of rule, the United States officially ceded ownership of the Panama Canal to the nation of Panama. That nation did not exist when, in the mid-19th century, Europeans first began to explore the possibilities of creating a link between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through the narrow but mountainous isthmus; Panama was then a remote and overlooked part of Colombia. All that changed, writes David McCullough in his magisterial history of the Canal, in 1848, when prospectors struck gold in California. A wave of fortune seekers descended on Panama from Europe and the eastern United States, seeking quick passage on California-bound ships in the Pacific, and the Panama Railroad, built to serve that traffic, was soon the highest-priced stock listed on the New York Exchange. To build a 51-mile-long ship canal to replace that railroad seemed an easy matter to some investors. But, as McCullough notes, the construction project came to involve the efforts of thousands of workers from many nations over four decades; eventually those workers, laboring in oppressive heat in a vast malarial swamp, removed enough soil and rock to build a pyramid a mile high. In the early years, they toiled under the direction of French entrepreneur Ferdinand de Lesseps, who went bankrupt while pursuing his dream of extending France's empire in the Americas. The United States then entered the picture, with President Theodore Roosevelt orchestrating the purchase of the canal--but not before helping foment a revolution that removed Panama from Colombian rule and placed it squarely in the American camp. The story of the Panama Canal is complex, full of heroes, villains, and victims. McCullough's long, richly detailed, and eminently literate book pays homage to an immense undertaking. --Gregory McNamee |

Thanks for the post about the orphan in Romania. I used to read things like that, but I just got to the point that I couldn't bear to read or hear about people suffering. Maybe it was because I felt overwhelmed, already, by the bad stuff that I knew about in the world. Probably I was seeing too much news; I cut back on that, too. |

I doubt Amazon has any formal policy on matching one-day sale prices. I've seen them do it and not do it in different situations. I suspect it's more a matter of whether their price-monitoring staff and/or software notices a given sale in time to make the change.

http://store.kobobooks.com/en-CA/ebo...tween-the-seas If it is on sale there, it must be on sale globally ![]() This month is the centennary of the Panama Canal opening (S.S. Ancon did the first official transit on Aug. 15, 1914). It is doubtful if there has been any other building project since that has brought so many benefits to the world. |

Jefferson and Hamilton: The Rivalry That Forged a Nation
by John Ferling is today's Kindle Daily Deals. It can be downloaded for $1.99. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...d_i=1000677541 Below is the blurb: A spellbinding history of the epic rivalry that shaped our republic: Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and their competing visions for America. From the award-winning author of Almost a Miracle and The Ascent of George Washington, this is the rare work of scholarship that offers us irresistible human drama even as it enriches our understanding of deep themes in our nation’s history. The decade of the 1790s has been called the “age of passion.” Fervor ran high as rival factions battled over the course of the new republic—each side convinced that the other’s goals would betray the legacy of the Revolution so recently fought and so dearly won. All understood as well that what was at stake was not a moment’s political advantage, but the future course of the American experiment in democracy. In this epochal debate, no two figures loomed larger than Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. Both men were visionaries, but their visions of what the United States should be were diametrically opposed. Jefferson, a true revolutionary, believed passionately in individual liberty and a more egalitarian society, with a weak central government and greater powers for the states. Hamilton, a brilliant organizer and tactician, feared chaos and social disorder. He sought to build a powerful national government that could ensure the young nation’s security and drive it toward economic greatness. Jefferson and Hamilton is the story of the fierce struggle—both public and, ultimately, bitterly personal—between these two titans. It ended only with the death of Hamilton in a pistol duel, felled by Aaron Burr, Jefferson’s vice president. Their competing legacies, like the twin strands of DNA, continue to shape our country to this day. Their personalities, their passions, and their bold dreams for America leap from the page in this epic new work from one of our finest historians. |

The Souls of Black Folk
by W. E. B. Du Bois Overview: Originally published in 1903, The Souls of Black Folk is a classic study of race, culture, and education at the turn of the twentieth century. With its singular combination of essays, memoir, and fiction, this book vaulted W. E. B. Du Bois to the forefront of American political commentary and civil rights activism. The Souls of Black Folk is an impassioned, at times searing, account of the situation of African Americans in the United States. Du Bois makes a forceful case for the access of African Americans to higher education, memorably extols the achievements of black culture (above all the spirituals or "sorrow songs"), and advances the provocative and influential argument that due to the inequalities and pressures of the "race problem", African American identity is characterized by "double consciousness". This extraordinary work not only recorded and explained history, it helped to alter its course. Written after Du Bois had earned his Ph.D. from Harvard and studied in Berlin, these 14 essays contain both the academic language of sociology and the rich lyrics of African spirituals, which Du Bois called "sorrow songs." Product Details: ISBN-13: 9781480483842 ASIN: B00K5EBF8M Publisher: Open Road Media Publication date: 5/27/2014 At BN.com US At Amazon.com US NOTE: This book is collection of short fiction and nonfiction, so I'm cross-posting it.
