Is a comprehensive dictionary available ?

I have tried several of the free dictionaries and find them to be lacking in words, I resort to the web for definitions on a separate pc, not a ideal situation.

Does anyone know, or have experience of a Comprehensive shareware dictionary for ereaders ?.

Sorry, not a direct answer to your thread title question, but: you can also search Wikipedia or Google for the word directly from your Kobo, no need to resort to a separate computer.

Thanks, but searching the web requires a connection, I travel to many places where internet is not available, plus the beach doesn't have wifi, nor does the camp site, Sweden has first class internet but not in the log cabin buried in the forest.

I'm going to try and source a $$ dictionary. Failing that try to merge the open source dictionaries, or, perhaps just load all the open source dictionaries to my Kobo titled as Eng 1, 2, etc... if that can be done.

Edit:
I'm amazed that none of the big names, oxford, Merriam, offer a dictionary for ereaders,

Ok, I'm stumped, definitely bitten off more than I can chew trying to merge dictionaries, and Oxford is going to release their stage3 dictionary for ereaders in 2018.

Does anyone have a idea of how I can have two English dictionaries on my Glo ?. I would like to have the Chambers and Webster dictionaries. I don't mind having to rename a dictionary as English-French, as long as I can have them on my device.

That isn't accurate. These companies do offer dictonaries/solutions that can be integrated into any device of software app.

I agree with you that most if not all dictionaries (in any language) currently shipped with ereaders are severly crippled because they contain to few word entries.

You should blame Kobo not willing to licence and pay for a proper dictionary for their ereaders.
  • Merriam-Webster's Pocket Dictionary (40,000 entries)
  • Van Dale Pocketwoordenboek Nederlands (Dutch) (30,037 entries)

Not sure which Engish language dictionary is installed on Kobo readers as a copyright notice does not appear when looking up words of definitions. But it can probably be found in the "About Kobo" info under Settings.
The currenly installed Dutch dictonary on Kobo devices is "Pocketwoordenboek Nederlands" editon 2011. That contains even less entries than the latest version.
This pocket edition is almost useless as it wont find many very common, simple or/and non-complex words.

All Kobo has to do is pay the appropiate license fees.

Really, Oxford have a dictionary for ereaders available ?.

Could you provide a link please ?.

I have stated that I am willing to pay for a dictionary, all I want is to be pointed in the right direction, can you do that ?.

I'm really not interested in your rants about how ereader OEM's aren't willing to pay for dictionaries.

No, these companies don't sell dictonaries that can be installed to ereaders directly or don't offer these formats to the customer directly.
However, their regular software products can be customized for OEM devices such as ereaders. That was what i was writing about (or meaned to say) not to rant about it.
Maybe you should contact Kobo and ask if they could consider selling a premium dictionary with more word entries. You are not the only person who is willing to pay for a better dictionary.

So the short answer is no, you have make a choice between
  1. a free dictionary (and is available in file format Kobo uses for their dictonaries or can be converted to that format)
  2. the dictonaries provided by Kobo
Both are limited in the number of word entries.

You have stated that you tried several free dictionaries, but I am not sure as to what ones you are refering. Have you tried these? The Websters1913.zip has over 110,000 definitions, which is 30,000 more than the stock dictionary.

If that is not sufficient there is also a zip there that explains how to create your own dictionary.

I revisited the Dev Dictionary forum and realised that I should try and rename the other english dictionary to dicthtml-de, This worked and I now have two english dictionaries although the second one is labelled as "Deutsch" I don't really mind. Mission Accomplished.

Oxford, hurry up please.

I thought that I had a ok vocabulary, until I started reading Christopher Hitchens' - Arguably Essays
