I am totally new and I need help

I had a Kindle once (stolen) and a friend convinced me to get a tablet, so I got an Android Tab 2 (for reading mostly)
I even learned how to download books via Amazon.
Another friend has thousands of books on his computer and loaded lots of them to my Android.
The problem is, they are all Mobi files (whatever they are) and I can't seem to open them.
I read some much earlier threads (2013) on downloading something called epub and RBreader or something like that, but I don't know how to find it or download it.
Can anybody point the way???
