Migrating collections from Kindle Keyboad to new model
I've ordered my new kindle, and I can't wait to get it. But a niggly worry has crept in...
Currently I have a kindle keyboard (i.e. no cloud collections). I blithely assumed that there wouldn't be a problem getting those same collections on my new kindle, that they would just transfer automatically. Then I did some reading, and thought, okay, I'll have to import them instead of it happening automatically, but that's okay. But I wanted to get a headstart on setting my cloud collections, so I installed Kindle for PC. That has the import collections button, but... no devices show up to import from. Please tell me I won't have to set up all my collections from scratch... that will be enough to make my cancel my order ![]() |

I remember importing my collections directly to my kindle after I had imported all my books. My books were automatically placed in the correct collections. It seemed to go OK.

Your collections should transfer over just fine.
It is merely that Kindle4PC is and has always been a third-class citizen. Yes, it doesn't even rate second-class. ![]() |

I want to import my collections on my K3 to my new Paperwhite but I have no clue how to do it. I'm very confused by what I've read about this so far.
Can someone please set out the procedure step-by-step? |

I think on any device with Cloud Collections it should automatically just appear, without you doing anything.
On my Kindle Touch (and I assume either PW on fw<=5.4.0) you'd just go to Cloud and select Menu and one of the options is "Import Collections". |

My paperwhite doesn't have a menu selection for import collections. The only menu items are shop Kindle store, Kindle FreeTime, Experimental Browser, Settings, View Special Offers, Cover View, Create New Collection and Sync and Check for Items.

Either of two reasons, probably both:
You are in Device view, not Cloud view. Your firmware is >=5.4.2 and the option has been removed. |

Yes, if it didn't happen automatically.
There are hacks which do a much better job of creating and importing collections anyway, cf. LibrarianSync Last edited by eschwartz; 10-29-2014 at 05:33 PM. Reason: typing-on-a-kindle-touch typos. |

As I'm interested in the question too -- does LibrarianSync require a jailbroken kindle? I'm moving from a K4 to the new Voyage*.
Also -- having looked up LibrarianSync -- does it work on DRMed books? *Probably -- so far the response to finger presses is underwhelming, in accuracy and speed -- I might have to return it. But that's not the question HERE. Last edited by badgoodDeb; 10-29-2014 at 05:00 PM. |

Yes and yes.
LibrarianSync works on filenames. And it must be run from the Kindle, as the database which manages collections is located on the hidden OS partition. Anyone looking to hack their Kindle is advised to stick with the PW for the moment. Hopefully we will discover a new jailbreak exploit soon. |

Darn, it's not working for me either.
Strangely, it did pick up some of my very old collections, that I'd deleted from my KindleKeyboard ages ago. But it didn't pick up any of my current collections, and I don't have an "import collections" button. It does have all my books, but of course they're all just jumbled together. All 2135 of them ![]() It seems so shortsighted of amazon not to provide a migration path... then again, I guess they don't need to because they sold me a device anyway! I would have thought that with Cloud Collections they'd let you manage it all online, but I guess that's not going happen either. |

My collections on my KK migrated automatically when I turned on the Voyage. I haven't filled them up yet. Most of the books are still in the cloud. I have noticed a few errors, but they might have been mine. For example, having a book in an "unread" collection when it should be in a "read" collection.
Cath, maybe if you turn on your KK and your Voyage and sync the Voyage with the cloud it will work? |
