epub ifilter in windows 10 pro
For your information:
I installed windows 10 pro this morning. Calibre is running well. By accident, while checking if a pdf ifilter was present in the file types list for search (control panel, indexing options, advanced, file types), I discovered an epub ifilter. I changed its settings to "index file name AND contents" indexing. It then changed to "plain text filter". Indexing is still running. I'll report more when the indexing is finished. ![]() Last edited by Capricorn; 07-31-2015 at 01:19 PM. |

Where does this get set (and possibly adjusted as you indicate)? Is there a downside? |

I have amended the original post to indicate where you can change it.
As far as I know there is no downside. Of course, a large number of epubs will take time to index. But letting it run at night, solves that problem. By the way, no guru here either. I just like the windows search a lot and use it regularly. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() At last a real reason to upgrade to WinTen - thanks for letting us know I've wanted this for years. Even had a go at writing my own iFilter - worked on XP but not on Win7 - and it was flaky. I always keep an indexable format (PDF, TXT, DOCX etc) Living in a country starting with 'A' probably means I'll get the free release last - reverse polish sorting ![]() BR |

In my experience the download is considerably faster than the update process (maybe because of lower server load???, but as more become aware of the tool, perhaps that will change ![]() |

My 'fantasy' was that if you signed up for the upgrade then you were put on a download drip-feed, so come the release date there wouldn't be much to download. I'm in no hurry - maybe I can find a way to run the iFilters from Win10 on Win7. BR Last edited by BetterRed; 08-01-2015 at 04:28 AM. |

@Capricorn - there's no sign of an epub iFilter on my Windows 10 Pro (Upgrade).
If you tell it to index epub contents, it will default to the text iFilter, IIRC Windows has always done that. But that's no use, to index the content of an epub requires it be unpacked and the HTML, XML, and JPEG files be processed by the corresponding iFilter dlls. If your epubs are being indexed can you provide details of what iFilter you used and where it's located. That screenshot comes from Nirsoft's SearchFilterView utility. BR |

Hi BetterRed,
I found this filter after I had nuked my upgrade and did a clean install from MS provided installation media. I did not verify if there was an epub filter after the upgrade. If you read my original post again, I have indicated where the filter is. I did not install any filter as far as I know, unless some other program I use, did it. I have not used the nirsoft tool to see what is available. I have only used indexing options in control panel of windows 10. When I go into the indexing options and change the epub filter to also index contents, it says: plain text filter. Having been on the road the past few weeks and hence not used my computer, I have now seen that my indexing has not finished yet. However, with the few tests I have done of text inside epubs, it "seems" to work. But having read your post, I will now do some more testing to see what happens and what the search finds, especially after the indexing has finished. I do hope it works and it is not as you describe. Once I have done that, I'll report back. Last edited by Capricorn; 08-18-2015 at 04:44 AM. |

To index an epub you have to unpack and index the content. AFAIK you wont get anything useful from an epub out of the plan text iFilter. However, someone has recently found a very comprehensive full text search program for Windows, see ==>> Full text search in Ebook library ![]() It's called Archivarius 3000, I downloaded the trial version only yesterday so haven't had much time to evaluate. There's a lot to like about it, indexes everything I've ever heard of and a heck of lot I've never heard of. It's fast and it seems to be accurate. I'm not enamoured with its user interface and its indexes are fairly chunky, but... better than Windows Search for ebooks. Its not free - single user is €30, unlimited users (Windows Server) is a €1,000. I assume the name derives from this Archie and Various BR |

Hi BetterRed,
Unfortunately, and to my great disappointment, I have to say, after further testing, that it does NOT do any indexing of the epub files. You are totally right. In my enthusiasm of finding an epub ifilter, I definitely posted far too soon. My apologies for wasting your time. That "Archivarius 3000" looks promising. I'll have a look at it tomorrow. Too tired for now. Take care, |
