Not all metadata keeping when saving?

Hello all. I'm teaching a 2-part class about Calibre. The homework assignment was to take a book from Gutenberg, add metadata (including rating, tags, and a cover), and send the updated mobi or epub file to me. I was under the impression that if they used the "save to disk" function and saved it to a new location, all the metadata would be intact with the file. However, when they have been sending the files over to me, some are missing ratings, covers, etc. even though they are supposed to be in there. Some files work fine though.

Any other steps or thoughts on what I might be missing?

Thanks.

Different ebook formats support different amount of metadata. MOBI in particular supports relatively little metadata, epub supports all of it.

Hmm interesting. I had someone send me both an epub and a mobi file. The mobi kept the cover but did not keep the rating intact. The epub file did not keep the cover but did keep the rating.

When I tried to add a cover, save the epub file, and send it back to her, it did not work and instead had the default "text" cover. Any ideas what I can do differently? I'm attaching both files that were sent to me.

Thanks

cover updates in epub will only work if the epub has an existing cover. If it doesn't you need to either do an epub to epub conversion or use the Polish Book tool to insert the cover.

Okay thanks. So if I just do a epub to epub conversion and then send it on that should work?

Good to know about the Polish Book tool cover too.

Awesome! Thanks for your help. Can't wait to share the info in class today (and brag to everyone how I talked to the "creator"). They'll be impressed
