travelling with epub reader?
How do you get books onto your reader when you're on holidays?
OK, you're just starting a holiday trip. On the plane the person next to you starts talking about the newly published "abc" novel they are reading. They even let you read it while they are snoozing. So you head off to the nearest internet cafe, find the book on some online bookstore, as a DRM'ed epub. What do you do now? |

If you have a particular desire to do that, you'd be better off with a reader that allows you to purchase books on the device itself, such as a Kindle.

The OP has a Kobo Glo which allows purchases from the device, so I don't understand the point of the question.

So if you have any of the more common epub readers and access to a WiFi network (don't most hotels offer access to one these days either for free or for a fee?), it should be reasonably easy to buy a book straight from the device, from the bookshop associated with the reader. Or am I misunderstanding something? |

Read one of the 1473 books you have on your device.

You can go to Project Gutenberg via the experimental web browser and download books. Anyone try this with Baen Free Library?

OK, It was a poorly thought out question.
It was "How do you ...", YOU don't necessarily have a glo! I haven't thoroughly explored the kobo or any other store, but I'm sure there must be books they don't have. Maybe from some obscure boutique publisher? It just occurred to me, that IF I found myself in that situation I would not know what to do. Hense the question. I'm not really au fait with DRM. Does the kobo have a complete ADE or equivalent to download e-books, using the .acsm file? The early responses seem to suggest there is no solution for DRM on the go. |

The vast majority of ereaders happily download right to their devices; DRM is not a problem requiring a "solution." If you must read a book immediately while on the go, buy the book already and read it!

As far as I can tell, any epub reader that has an affiliated bookshop, will let you buy books right from the ebook reader itself (just like the Kindle does with Amazon) - no actual need to go through a computer, download with ADE and then transfer the file to the reader.
It is of course possible that the neighbour is reading something completely obscure, sold by some minor publisher directly (in which case it's likely not on Amazon either, so "epub reader" shouldn't be the issue), but in my experience small publishers/authors who only sell directly often sell DRM-free files anyway, if only because that's the only way they can sell Kindle-compatible files. |

I think this thread is more aimed at books the person hasn't already bought, than those that they have.

Yes. My point is that he can purchase the book from his device and read immediately, so what's the issue? Isn't that what we've been saying? DRM is irrelevant in this hypothetical instance.
