What part of the year best for buying?
I want to replace my 1st gen Kindle Fire, and I'm thinking full bore Android tablet (possibly bigger than 7 inch screen) and I don't want to spend a bunch of money.

What part of the year is best for deals on tablets? After Christmas? "Black Friday" in the USA?

Any unknown brands that are surprisingly good and suitable for grown up use?

Right around the time that new models are announced you can usually get price cuts on the superseded models (which are often still perfectly good tablets with a lot of life left in them).

The Nexus 7 (16GB) is on sale at BestBuy and Amazon for $199.99 right now, $30 bucks off the usual MSRP. The Snapdragon S4 Pro (which is actually a Snapdragon 600, I believe) SoC in it is still fairly capable. And the Nexus tablets are suitable for big boy use.

Last Oct 2013, Amazon released the Fire HDX 7 to replace the Fire HD 7. The following month on Black Friday, I paid $100 for brand new Fire HD 7s. I usually wait for Black Friday to see which items get bigger than normal discounts.
