Hi,
I'd like to ask someone who installs the "KPW1 FW Update 5.4.4.2" to check something. The old KPW1 5.3.5 firmware introduced (and it was present up to KPW1 5.3.9): View full definition when looking up a word When you look up a word in the dictionary, you can now view the full definition in the definition window. Some time ago I read somewhere here that the new KPW1 5.4.4 firmware no longer provides it. So, could you, please, check if they "restored" this feature in the newest KPW1 5.4.4.2 update? Thanks in advance and best regards. |

And, @pepe_alter_ego, the full definition was always maintained, and you can search another dictionaries in the same little windows too. You may have read something untrue. ![]() |

I know that I could always get the "full definition" when selecting a word in a book and then, when the "small dictionary window" appeared, by doing "More" -> "Dictionary".
However, starting first with the KPW1 5.3.5 firmware, the "full definition" is immediately displayed in the "small dictionary window" (together with a scrollbar in the right, when the definition is long). Also, for a word that has multiple meanings, in the "small dictionary window", I can switch between them using "<" and ">" screen buttons (for example, for the English word "No" I get 6 different meanings). So the question is, do you see a scrollbar right in the "small dictionary window" (for definitions which are long)? |

I put this on my PW1 and adding to collections seems to be a little faster. The last update made collections almost unusable for me. It took 2 minutes to add a book to collections. Now it takes maybe 30-40 seconds.
![]() I will check again later to make sure if the little more speed wasn't just because of the usual update reboot. I haven't noticed anything else different at all from either 5.4.4 or 5.4.4.1 Pretty much the same. eta: as to the dictionary question. I am not sure I understand that question. I have a scroll bar, I am on 5.4.4.2 now. I always had a scroll bar I am pretty sure, on 5.4.4 and on 5.4.4.1 I press a word and I get a window. I have no clue if that is a full definition or small window. I have no clue what either looks like. I hightlight the word gypsy for example and I get a pop up covering almost all of the screen. It shows dictionary and there are 2 more tabs called xray and wikipedia. There is a scroll bar as I have 2 definitions for the word. Underneath there are 2 boxes to press, Search and More. Does that help? Last edited by Atunah; 05-08-2014 at 05:24 PM. |

It would be nice if dictionary cascade worked again.

So, encouraged by your replies (many thanks for them) I installed the KPW1 FW Update 5.4.4.2 and I can confirm that all features that I mentioned in my previous posts here seem to be working fine.
Just for the record ... that means: 1. when you look up a word in the dictionary, you can view the full definition in the "small" dictionary definition window (a scrollbar appears when needed, introduced in the KPW1 5.3.5 firmware) 2. when you look up a word that has multiple meanings for the same spelling (homonym), you can navigate through each of the available definitions from within the "small" dictionary definition window ("<" and ">" buttons appear when needed, introduced in the KPW1 5.3.8 firmware) 3. when you look up a word in the dictionary, you can choose to look up the word in other dictionaries on your device from within the "small" dictionary definition window (introduced in the KPW1 5.3.8 firmware) I've got a question to "tomsem". What do you mean by "dictionary cascade"? It seems I am missing something that I haven't even heard about! ![]() |

I've noticed that for Cloud Collections the collections are now shown also under Books and Docs, handy for me as I have collections exclusively one or the other. My Amazon book only collections show under Books, but not my personal document collections, and visa versa.

Having more than one dictionary for a language is supported -> see point 3. in my previous post here.

Thanks for the explanation. Indeed, the "dictionary cascade" feature does not work any more. But I don't miss it that much. I've got a bunch of 5 English related dictionaries installed now. Among them English-Chinese and English-Japanese (well, they might be useful one day, you never know). With the old firmware, it happened to me many times that an English word was not found in the default "Oxford" dictionary but it was found in some of the remaining ones. So I was getting perfect explanations in Chinese and/or Japanese. Needless to say, I don't speak any of these languages.
![]() I think one would need an additional option in the "Settings" -> "Device Options" -> "Language and Dictionaries" -> "Dictionaries". Not only the language specific "default dictionary" setting is needed but also "enable dictionary for automatic searches" (so that one could "unmark" dictionaries that use languages which one doesn't really speak). I believe I miss another feature very much (it was never present in any firmware). When a word is not found in the dictionary, one simply gets the message "No definition found" in the "small" dictionary definition window. When one then clicks "More", the "Open Dictionary" button is inactive (i.e. "greyed out"), so there's no easy way to enter the dictionary and search for a word manually. I would like the search engine to automatically open the dictionary on a word which is as much similar to the wanted one as possible (for example, as many initial letters as possible should "match"). On second thought, what I miss the most is the JBPatch ... in particular the possibility to reduce reader margins (and maybe enable hyphenation) ... KPW1 5.3.4 firmware was the last supported version. ![]() Last edited by pepe_alter_ego; 05-09-2014 at 04:38 PM. |

In addition to that, the 1st-generation Paperwhite device now supports Inline Footnotes, which allows users to read each footnote completely without losing their place in the book.
That is an new feature. I would love to install it, but I wonder since I am on 5.4.4.1 will I lose possibility to jailbreak my kindle PW1? Do I have that possibility now? |
