Kobo Glo not connecting to Laptop

Hello,
I have a Kobo Glo that I have plugged it into my Laptop to charge, yet my computer is not recognizing it. I selected the option on the Kobo screen to "Connect and charge"; the Kobo is now charging and has a message "Please eject your eReader before unplugging the USB cable." However, the device is not available to be disconnected. It is not in the "This PC" section or the tab with active programs/devices. I cannot turn on the eReader (it was completely dead when plugged in), or do anything else. I am worried it will cause an error if I just unplug it without ejecting (which happened once by accident before). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Note: At this point it has been plugged in for an hour (or more) so I believe it should have power to "Continue Reading" or "Manage Library" - neither option has come up.

shutting down your laptop will automatically disconnect/eject the reader, if you are worried about that.

I don't get a Connect and Charge button on mine when I plug it in....only Cancel or Connect. Perhaps the USB cable you are using is only capable of charging and not data transfer?

So as advised I shut down my computer to eject the reader. After restarting I tried to plug it in again - received the options "Cancel" or "Connect" so I was wrong about that in my first post. Chose connect, the screen changes and goes to the "Connected and charged" message. Computer still not recognizing that it is even connected - even though it has charged it today. Any other advice?

I thought all USB cables were created equal? As far as being able to transfer data and such.

I've run into some cable differences on odd devices (like my Motorola phone and Harmony remote require a different cable than my ereaders even though the plug is the same, they won't charge or do anything with the standard generic cable). It's possible you have a defective cable as well. Or a defective port on the laptop (did you rule it out connecting other devices?)

When you choose "Connect" when the Glo is connected, you should be able to see the files on it through Windows Explorer, and the reader should say "Connected and Charging". If you select "Cancel", it should still charge but will allow you to read, but you can't see the reader in Windows Explorer then.

Is your laptop staying powered on and not going into sleep or hibernate when the reader is connected? On quite a few readers, that will drain the battery and not charge it. No idea if it's that way on the Kobo readers, I always charge from my main PC that never shuts down. And since you said the reader was completely dead when you first plugged it in, it would certainly need more than 1 hour, I'd let it charge overnight if possible. But again, the laptop can't go to sleep at all during that time.

If that's the case maybe it is the cable. I'll try a different one tonight or tomorrow.

Yeah I use the port frequently, and it's always worked. I also have my laptop plugged in, and I've been using it all day so it's not going into sleep mode. The Kobo does say "Connected and charged" but the computer does not recognize that its even attached - no notice when I plug it in, or when I choose "Connect" on the Kobo. As far as the computer is concerned it's not there.

It charged for a few hours and then the message changed to say "charged". Also, my laptop is my main PC, as I don't use a desktop any more. Normally I would use the plug in the wall with an adapter, but I wanted to transfer some files and I don't have a micro SD card.

do you maybe have a higher speed/power cable from like a smartphone or something? I don't even use the one that came with my glo, just use the one I already have out from my galaxy s4

Not with the same end. The ones I have have a wider/thicker end (Blackberry). The one I have with it, is a Logitech one (just looked). Could that be it? As I said I thought they were all the same.

solved?

Just now I've had a similar problem. My HD suddenly was not recognised by the PC anymore, while with the same cable the 6" works fine. I tried another cable with same results. I tried with the laptop, same results. The HD did recognise that it was connected to a computer but the computer didn't recognise it. Sooo I turned the reader off, and now it works. I should have started with this basic step.

But I worried because I plug and unplug the cable intensively, I'm not the most patient and careful user, and I hope the hardware keeps up at least while the battery is ok.
