Anyone recognise this ereader?

From here: http://www.wisn.com/article/ereader-...school/9134041

Quote:
eReader catches fire at elementary school

A Fond du Lac elementary school student has perhaps the save of the day by smelling a smoldering eReader in school.

The Fond du Lac Fire Department said the student smelled something and saw smoke coming from a classroom.

The battery had started to overheat and melt.

The eReader belonged to a teacher.

The fire department said it contacted the manufacturer and there are no recalls on the device.
I'm just wondering which device it is. Here's a screenshot of the pic:

Tablet...

Judging by the case it's sat on and that the device has a camera, I would say this is a tablet, as opposed to an e-reader. Not an iPad, so could be anything...

After doing some keyboard work (I've been waiting to use that phrase for a while) this article states it's an "Acer ebook" whatever that is. The link also has a video for those who want to investigate this further (fans of the detective genre take note ).

Maybe an Acer Iconia B1-730 or similar model. Definitely a tablet and not a dedicated reader.

Yes.
And odds are strong that there was nothing wrong with the tablet but they probably were charging it with a crappy aftermarket charger.

Looks like the fire department investigated that angle:

Quote:
The fire department says the device was not being charged or in use at the time. "Typically, it would be connected to a charger that would cause the battery to overheat, but in this case it just started up all by itself and started to spontaneous combust," said Division Chief Troy Haase.

A bad charger can destabilize the battery, though.
Lithium is tricky stuff.

Another news story called it an Acer tablet.

Yeah, it's not an ereader (duh).

Lithium batteries blow up real good.

Not that I ever participated in throwing BA4386s in the fire during my Military days. That was unauthorized. At least it became unauthorized for some reason.

Batteries seem to combust easily sometimes. There are accounts of e-cigarette's and hoverboards also bursting into flame. The technology seems to have some problems yet.

Yeah it doesn't look like it's small enough to be a dedicated ereader. More like a small tablet computer.

Don't give them ideas.
There's already restrictions on shipping some kinds of batteries.

It's already here:

Tablets & laptops banned from cabin baggage on flights to USA from 10 airports

Quote:
The U.S. government has announced a ban on carrying tablets, laptops and other ‘large electronic devices’ in cabin baggage on flights to the USA from 10 airports. The measure is said to be in response to intelligence on terrorism threats from eight countries, mostly Middle Eastern and North African, reports the BBC.

Quote:
Officials said extremists were planning to bring down passenger jets with bombs hidden in laptops, tablets cameras, DVD players and electronic games.

The measure will affect nine airlines operating out of 10 airports. Large electronic devices will only be allowed on board in checked baggage. Phones are exempt from the new rules.

Lithium Batteries can not be shipped by air. I used to could have up to 11 lithium watch batteries shipped in a package by air. Now if I purchase even 1watch battery it has to go ground.
