PRS-500 issues..

I have a PRS-500 that has roughly 2100 books on a 8 GB memory stick, taking up about 1 GB of space.
Although the device is functioning, my problem is that when I go to add more books to my memory stick the Sony Connect software refuses to add more to the memory stick. It complains that the device is no longer attached when I try this. The internal memory still accepts files.
I have taken the memory stick and put it in a card reader connected to my Mac and it reads fine, although this doesn't allow me to add files.
I tried the memory stick on my Toshiba Satellite M100 and the memory stick icon appears in My Computer, however when I try to access the memory stick it asks me to insert a memory stick (?).
Any ideas?

What file system is it formated with? FAT16 will only support up to 1 GB with 16KB clusters.

We have been down this road before. While the 500 will (in theory) read up to a 4 GB Memory Stick (and up to a 2 GB SD card) the directory structure peaks out before the stick fills.

Given AprilHare's situation, there will be 210 book table of contents screens. The solution given a long time back for the 500 was to get a number of smaller (read cheap) SD cards or Memory Sticks and segment the books.

I cannot imagine the time required to read the 2,100 books on that stick. I am on the other end of the spectrum in that I keep about 50 books on the 500 in use only about 30 MB of storage.

In answer (sorry about the long delay):
It comes formatted as FAT32.
I have later on tried deleting files from it using the Sony software; this succeeded, however I cannot write new files to the memory stick.
If I were able to make extra directories, could I "break up" the 2000 odd files in the "Sony Reader\Books" directory and thus overcome this limitation? I am assuming formatting the memory stick would be the only option available to me.
My laptop now claims it is unformatted. I am currently backing up books using the card reader attached to my Mac, however it won't let me write to or delete from the memory stick.
The only other symptom of note is that whenever I disconnect the Sony Reader, it forgets all bookmarks, seemingly "remembering" old ones from April. Also, any new bookmarks get recorded as occuring is 2006 or 2005.

I have bought a memory card reader/writer from Dick Smith Electronics for $40. I deleted the cache files (as the memory card lets me read and write to the memory stick) and it is now recompiling them.
My theory is the memory stick cache files got munged.
I checked it out a good while back and it isn't just theory that the Sony Reader supports 8 GB memory sticks, it's Sony's position.
