Issue with Kobo Aura and Collections

I have to use wifi sync to get my Pocket Articles but today when I've used it I suddenly have 16 pages of collections, a lot are duplicated, some up to 4 times. Most are empty. When I select delete on the Aura I get asked if I want to delete them, I select delete as confirmation and nothing happens?

I don't create collections on the Aura, they are loaded as I send books to it from Calibre.

Can anyone tell me how to get rid of them or any I looking at a full reset?

I have 112 collections to remove and to say it's annoying is an understatement.

The Kobo Utilities plugin has a way to get rid of the duplicate shelves. The function is "Fix duplicate shelve" and is under the "Database" menu. This will display a list of all the shelves and the number of duplicates. You have a choice of keeping the oldest or newest (doesn't really matter) and whether to purge the entries from the database. Once you choose the options, press the "OK" button to get rid of the shelves.

If you don't choose the purge option, you should do a sync afterwards. This should tell the Kobo server to get rid of the duplicates. It generally works, but not always.

As a defence against this in the future, you can add an option the the config file on the device to prevent the shelves from syncing. To do this, you add "SyncShelves=false" into the "ApplicationPreferences" section of the file.

Thanks Davidfor. I have been able to get rid of the duplicates but even though i've added the SyncShelves=false every sync is still bringing in the duplicates so not idea what i've done wrong there

Hmm, it works here and has for a few firmware versions. It needs to be in the right place. On a separate line somewhere after the line with "[ApplicationPreferences]" and before the next section start.

I open the config file with Notepad so everything is all squashed together.

This is how i insert the words

[ApplicationPreferences]SyncShelves=false37396638=true66666333=

I save the file but everytime I look again at the config file its disapeared.

I've even deleted the kobo app on my ipad as everything is messed up when i sync.

Sorry, I should have said not to use Notepad. You need to use an editor that is Unix line end aware. I usually use Notepad++. When using Notepad, all the options end up on one line. Unfortunately, once this has happened, fixing the file is a pain. The simplest thing to do is delete it and let the device create a new file. You will only lose your settings. Then you can add the option at the next connection.

Thank you Davidfor. I downloaded Notepad++ and used that to add the line to the config file and it seems to sync fine now.
