E Ink's working on a smartwatch with a full wraparound display
Source: http://www.engadget.com/2014/06/04/e...nd-smartwatch/
![]() I would quote the article but it only has two paragraphs. Last edited by Sil_liS; 06-07-2014 at 03:33 PM. |

Sounds more like imaginative speculation--what could they do with e-Ink screens kind of thing. It seems more like a concept than a product. Nothing in that two paragraph article makes me think this is actually a product nearing introduction. I think e-Ink might simply be trying to plant ideas in smartwatch makers heads in a futile attempt to keep their dying business alive. Tablets are killing the e-Ink market and they need to find alternative markets or they will disappear. BTW, the example screen they show is way too big for a smartwatch. I doubt many people could comfortably wear something that big on their wrists.

The Samsung Gear 2 smart watch is already available here for a mere $ 300:
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Gear-S...eywords=gear+2 It works with the Samsung Galaxy s5 smart phone so one can make and receive calls to one's watch. The Gear 2 Neo smart watch is also available for $ 200. |

What does the Samsung have to do with e-Ink? The Pebble, on the other hand, does use e-Ink and uses it very effectively: I don't have to recharge my watch every day!

Ugly. I don't know if it is only me but I cannot wear any watch that is not mechanical.

I'd rather just wear my phone on my wrist.
In all seriousness though, these eInk screen watches intrigue me, but I don't care for all these LCD ones coming out. But then my phone is setup so I know the difference between a weather alert vs a text message vs a new news post. It just gets us to shell out more money from our pockets. |

A small startup like Pebble can put out an eink watch for geeky types, but if, say, Apple produced a gray scale iwatch with glacially slow refresh rate, people would think they'd lost their freaking mind.
Eink should put their energy into improving their display, not making more ugly concept products. |

And the wraparound concept shows that you can have a bigger screen available, because unlike LCD the power consumption is low. |

![]() I bought my Pebble for use while cycling: as a bike computer that also shows me txts etc. without having to take out my phone and with a battery that lasts as long as I need. For my use case, the eInk display is perfect. |

There is another eink watch that is now up for preorder. Apparently there was a kickstarter for this (their goal was $200k and they got over $1 million)
![]() This isn't a smartwatch, and the display doesn't reach the whole bracelet, but maybe CST-02 will. |
