May 29 email from Kobo

In case anybody hasn't received it yet, here's a copy/paste. Looks like good news re: some of the books that didn't transfer.

Dear Kobo Reader:

I have some good news: we've added thousands of new titles to the Kobo catalogue, including some books previously available only in the Sony Reader Store.

Some titles from the Reader Store might not have transferred to Kobo with the rest of your books. Now that many of them are available from Kobo, we've automatically transferred them to you – just sync your Library to see if you have any newly added reads. And very soon, you'll also be able to shop for new titles from Kobo directly from your T1, T2 or T3 Wi-Fi Reader from Sony.

We had hoped to make the Kobo Store available on these Wi-Fi Readers in May, but we need a little extra time to give you the best possible shopping experience. It's important to us that your experience with us is nothing short of world class, and we look forward to you enjoying Kobo on your device in June.

Until then, you can purchase books directly on kobo.com, and then sync your Reader to enjoy your next great read. Plus, with the free Kobo app for tablets and smartphones, you can also download, store, and read eBooks from Kobo anytime, anyplace.

I'm thrilled you've joined the Kobo community, and if you have any questions about this message, please feel free to contact me directly. We sincerely appreciate your business and your feedback.

Thank you,

Alan MacNevin
Executive Vice President & Chief Revenue Officer, Kobo Inc.

My experience with the Kobo store has been first rate. At first I was sorry to see the Sony store leave, now I'm glad they did. Even though my 505 and T2 are currently my readers, I can see a Kobo reader in my future.

Well you wouldn't have to update it, unless you use wifi on it AND are logged in with Sony (or Kobo?)

I am getting a used T1 (Super cheap) but no plans to log it into any account. It's one of the few readers you can use without registering! But if there are significant improvements to the home screen, I will upgrade it.

ETA well never mind. The one I got has gouges on the screen with resulting defects in the eink. It is being returned.

There was already one firmware update which removed the Sony store from the reader and replaced it with a link to the Kobo store, but so far it is not possible to actually buy books through that link.

The earlier emails from Sony about the Sony/Kobo transfer stated that an additional firmware update would be available in late May which would allow Sony PRS T1/2/3 users to buy directly from Kobo using their Sony readers.

This current email is telling us that this update was delayed but will still happen.

As Booklover said, you don't have to run the firmware update.

I either didn't get this email or somehow missed it. Glad to see they've remembered us.

It's had that update since (I think) March 27th. It's just that the Kobo store app still goes to a notification screen instead of the store on the T1, T2 and T3. The Store appears to be getting closer, though. It may be that I'll never buy a book from the Kobo Store on the T2, but it'll be nice to be able to do it if I want.

Looks like all my Sony books transferred over to Kobo without me having to do anything.

Sweet!

Especially since NONE of my Fictionwise books have ever transferred over to my B&N account, as promised more than a year and a half ago.

I've had some problems with Kobo CS in the past, but they certainly did this one up right.

Yeah, but it's theoretically possible that I could be travelling and only have my T2 (with no computer) and I could find a book that I really, really want to read. But, more in line with reality for me, the Kobo button is there, so I want it to work, even if I never use it.

Presumably you have an online library section, or downloads list ?
Having only used the Store a couple of times - before I found Alf & Calibre - it's only a hesitant suggestion .......
