Can't setup Kobo Glo

I got a new Kobo Aura, so I figured I'd give my old Glo to my Mom. The problem is, I can't get it set up. When I plug it into the computer it just bleeps and doesn't do anything else and the device isn't detected and doesn't show up in the computer as a removable drive. In fact, I can't connect any of my devices to the computer. Tried iphone, ipod, etc, nothing connects. I know everything works, because I can use them with my own computer. I know there must be something wrong in the settings of my Mom's computer, but what? I just can't figure it out. If anyone has any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated.

What shows up in Device Manager, especially in the section on USB controllers?

Do any devices show up with red question marks yellow exclamation marks next to them?

Does http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...th-usb-devices help?

It just says Ereader in device manager. I've also tried updating the drivers for the usb ports but it just says access denied or insists that everything is up to date.

I'm just concerned that no other USB devices you try seem to work either.

Are there any errors showing up in the Windows Event Viewer?

I can't make heads or tails out of the event viewer, so I wouldn't know if there's errors or not.

I realize now that there are usb readers in the device manager that have yellow exclamation marks on them. Should these be uninstalled?

Not sure; but I sense it could not hurt.

I uninstalled them, rebooted and tried connecting again. Didn't work and now they're back. I try scanning for new hardware or installing manually, but it won't work and it says access denied or device driver software was not successfully installed. This is very frustrating.

have you tried a different usb-port? the port you're using, it is a front-usb port? those ports use to get faulty from time to time. use a port on the rear of the computer. or is it a laptop?

second thought, maybe there's some "hickup" in the system (weak capacitor or whatever), turn the system off, unplug the power cord (and if its a laptop, take out the battery). press and hold the power button for about 20 seconds. after doing so, plug the power cord back in, boot the system up and connect the kobo.

if it still doesnt work, either the windows-installation or the usb-controller is f**ked, no matter what, there should be absolutely no need for replacing/updating/installing drivers for the kobo, cause its just a simple storage device, just like a usb-stick, all the needed driverfiles come with windows.

Are you using an account with administrative privileges? Windows should prompt to raise the privileges if you aren't, but something might be going wrong with that.

Cyphox's suggestions are good. Plus I would try another cable. And another PC. You can also try USBDeview to make sure the Kobo drivers are completely uninstalled. Find any reference to Kobo devices in the list, select and uninstall them. There will probably be a lot of drivers for other devices. Removing any that are no longer used might help. After that, reboot and see what happens.
