Kobo Aura sharpness slider
Hi!
I have been using my Kobo Aura for quite some time now, having read a few books already. Recently i was checking a book my mother was reading on her Kobo Glo and noticed how much sharper the text was compared to my Aura. It should at least look the same. So i started tinkering with the options of both eReaders and found that my Aura doesn't have a sharpness slider. Do you know anything about this? I have the latest firmware version :S |

Are you using the same font?

In recent firmware the seperate weight and sharpness sliders were combined into a single slider that adjusts both properties, so the Glo you were looking at must be running an older firmware version than your Aura.
However others have noted that the Glo's screen is a bit shaper than the Aura's even at the same sharpness setting, so the lack of a seperate slider might not be the cause of the difference you see. (see this old thread) |

If you want the Aura to provide the sharpness slider for your own fonts, you will need to patch the Aura's firmware. There are good instructions and tools for doing that over in this thread in the developer's corner.

Thank you all for your answers! Really it's a mistery why they would remove the option.

What could I do to enable the sharpness slider again besides downgrading. I only use stock fonts so that's not a problem. If I could enable the slider at least for these it would be just great. Can a patch of some sort fix this?

There is no patch to enable the seperate sharpness slider, just one that enables the combined weight/sharpness slider for sideloaded fonts.
Starting from firmware 3.3.0 you can adjust the sharpness and weight for each font manually by editing the device's configuration file ".kobo/Kobo/Kobo eReader.conf". Once you have made an adjustment with the slider for a particular font, say Georgia, then the following lines will appear on the configuration file: Code:
readingFontSharpness\Georgia=-0.0666666666666667 readingFontWeight\Georgia=0.1 (Note: If you are using Windows, don't use Notepad to edit this file. Use an editor that understands unix line breaks such as Notepad++). |

Thanks! This is what I was looking for, I think it worked to some extent but the poor screen resolution on the aura is evident. I prefer its light for nighttime reading though, so it's not all bad...
