Calibre Companion prerelease 3.3.4e

CC prerelease 3.3.4e has been published and will available soon to people who are members of the CC prerelease program.

In addition to the changes in 3.3.4d affecting SD cards and Android 4.4, this release contains changes for Kindle Fire devices. I know that almost none of you can run a non-Amazon release on a KF, but since the changes could affect the Google Play version I am putting it out for test.

This prerelease contains the following changes over 3.3.4d:
  • Use the alternate launch scheme for Moon+, permitting CC to launch it for CBZ, CBR, and CHM book formats.
  • [BUG FIX] Better check if books are being moved to the same folder during folder setup.
  • [BUG FIX] Check for missing books now honors the "Move connect" option.

There is no database upgrade with this prerelease.

I hope to make this a production release by Friday.

Is there anything so nice as a new CC update notice in the morning?

I just tried this out and while it works, I think the messages might be a little vague for some users. I tried to move the books to the same sd card folder, and it asks me if I am sure, and then it says "moved successfully". Wouldn't it make more sense to have the message be "same folder, not moved". Someone with a lot of books might think something went wrong because it was so quick.

Also, I think it might be a mistake to show the dialog box allowing the user to move through the SD card file system. Anyone who takes advantage of that dialog to actually move to a different folder is going to run into problems if they go the wrong way. Wouldn't it make more sense to go straight from the "Use SD Card" dialog to the "Are you sure" dialog? If you want to allow them to see the dialog to pick a folder under the files folder, perhaps you should hide the "Up/Back" button when they are in the ".../files" folder.

I will look at that during the next prerelease cycle. The fact that the two folders are identical even though their names are different is discovered at a point where it is inconvenient to display such a dialog.

It is possible that the user has rooted their tablet, in which case they can put the folder wherever they want. I thought about providing a user interface for that situation, but then decided that anyone who knows how to root a device can work out the directory tree. Another possibility: some tablet manufacturer decides to remove the restriction as a marketing advantage. I don't know how much control Google has over what companies like Samsung or HTC do. Another possibility: someone delivers a tablet with 2 external SD cards (yes, I know I am reaching, but ...).

And in any event, CC won't let you pick a folder it can't write in, so the user can't (I hope) get into too much trouble.

Perhaps I wasn't clear, the "moved successfully" message is the last message that pops up. before it goes back to the main screen.

Well, that's ok then.
