Ubuntu One online storage closing down

I suspect anyone who uses the Ubuntu Operating System and needs this information already knows it, but the Ubuntu One online storage system will shut down on June 1st. All Ubuntu users should have gotten the email.

The Shutdown notice:

https://one.ubuntu.com/services/shutdown/

Ubuntu One is/was an online file storage service that was available free to Ubuntu OS users -- much like Dropbox. It offered 5 GB of storage free, with the opportunity to buy more storage, or earn more storage by referrals.

I have two laptops running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, so I found it convenient to keep my work synched. It was accessible from Windows, but I never needed it for my XP desktop.

Dropbox is well supported on Linux, so that's the way I went. I'm sure there are other options.

I got that e-mail too. It's very hard to compete with Dropbox when pretty much everything integrates it.

I'm using SpiderOak which works great on Ubuntu. I like it for the way it handles privacy. If you want to give it a try and need a referral link to get an additional 1G, let me know.

+1 for SpiderOak. I also use Wuala, Dropbox, and Google Drive. Can't have enough free stuff. Stuff that needs to be secure is best stored in SpiderOak or better yet encrypted and on a USB flash drive.

I only had one test file on Ubuntu 1 as I left many things Ubuntu when I moved to Linux Mint. I am pleased to see Canonical trying to refocus on their core competencies (like smartphones).
