Can no longer click on books

I suddenly can no longer click on either the books or the menu bar in Calibre. If I restart Calibre it sometimes changes from one to the other and after a time I can't click on anything. I'm nut sure when it started but I already deleted the libraries and updated to the newest version but the problem persists.

Edit: I noticed that when I move the mouse over the menu bar it still reacts as if I'm in the books window (I can change sort by author etc even tough my mouse is way above that column).

Edit2: I deleted the preferences and I can't even choose the ebook reader device because it won't let me click on it when I open Calibre after that. This is really strange...

Windows 8.1

This type of problem is in many cases due to the OS confusing a non-mouse device on a port as being a mouse, mostly this is confusing some serial input (RS232 or USB with USB->RS232 converter) as a serial mouse. Most people do not have RS232 devices any more unless they have some special need, but I mention it just in case, and this problem can exist with Win 8.x having experienced it myself with applications relying on RS232 inputs.

This happens with applications that look for devices on a port and, of course, Calibre does that when it looks to see if a reader of some sort is connected.

Whatever, in any event, I would suggest going into Control Panel>Device Manager (or just type device manager with the Win 8 Start page open and delete all the mice that may appear (touchpad too if you are using a notebook). Be especially alert if a serial mouse is listed (which one assumes on a modern PC you would not be using) or any other mouse type other than the one you are using (if one assumes you are using a bluetooth mouse then be alert if a USB mouse is listed).

With nothing connected to your PC other than the mouse, reboot the PC and it will reload the driver for your mouse.

If the problem persists still, and if it only occurs if your reading device is connected, then my next move would be to uninstall and then reinstall the device if is of a type that appears as a multimedia device in Control Panel>Devices and Printers (or type Devices and Printers on the Win 8 Start Page); it will probably only appear as such if it is a multimedia capable device such as a Tablet or Smartphone that you are using for reading (which I assume excludes the Kindle 3 if that is what is connected).

Beyond that I would start looking at anything else that may be permanently connected to the PC such as a USB scanner or printer, and see if the problem exists with them disconnected.

I unplugged and replugged the mouse and did a restart and it suddenly started to work again. Really weird because Calibre was the only program that had this problem. Thanks anyway though!
