AnyFont for $1.99 will let you install any font on iOS 7

You guys might want to grab it before it's gone.

You can read about it here:

http://www.tuaw.com/2014/03/03/anyfo...ur-ios-applic/

Quote:
With AnyFont it is finally possible to install any additional font in TrueTypeFont- (.ttf) or OpenTypeFont- (.otf) format on your iPhone or iPad. These fonts can then be used throughout the system in other apps like Pages, Keynote or Numbers.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/anyf...821560738?mt=8

Here is a screenshot from Noteshelf where I did some playing around. The fonts are Lato Light, Adobe Garamond Pro, and Roboto Thin.

Size:	122.5 KB

It works in the apps that take into account all the fonts in the system.

Whoah, nice find, Jessica. Hopefully some of the reading apps will accept new fonts as well. I just love the standard ubuntu font, and droid sans, and they just arent part of the apple ecosystem.

[edit] Stanza and Shubook both accept new fonts. Marvin, Kindle, and iBooks do not. Bummer re Marvin.

Yeah, maybe, just MAYBE we can get Kris to add that option. But I enjoy his choices of fonts anyway.

Apparently it's using legal APIs (making use of Apple Configurator) and is okay, so they have little reason to remove it from the store.

LOL! I wonder how easy or difficult it would be for him to simply make the font selection the system fonts, rather than including fonts in the app which I guess must be what he and some of the others have done.

I've installed Droid Sans and Bold, and the Fontin set Don't want to overdo it!

[edit] posted a query in the Marvin forum

IMO, this app is essential if you're using MS Office for iPad. (technically it's useful for ANY document interchange)

It is important to note that some fonts show up as a slightly different name on the iPad and so won't automatically be mapped when displaying/editing a file on the iPad.

I highly recommend picking up AnyFont ASAP because although it is using "legal APIs" it is not using them for the purpose they were intended and so Apple can pull the app at any time (especially if it exposes a security hole)... or update the API such that a future version of iOS won't support it.

There's another app that serves the same purpose - FONDFONT.

It is also a dollar cheaper than ANYFONT.

I've been wondering if I should buy this app but I'm a bit reluctant. I do have problems displaying Office documents on my iPad, so much so that I usually simply convert them to PDF before transferring them. Mostly I need documents on my iPad so that I can read them, and sometimes annotate them, for which PDF is good. But of course I would save time if I could just open documents from my mailbox and read or convert them to PDF from the iPad.

I don't know, I'm still reluctant to tinker with this kind of thing.

ETA: and I was hoping that MS Office for iPad included the original Windows font to avoid this problem. I surmise from your post that it's not the case?

MS Office for iPad is only useful if you have Office 365, I understand. Its free, for sure, but not really usable.

I have Documents2Go, which hasn't been bought by Google, its pretty good, and you dont have to convert anything. Why do you have trouble displaying Office docs? (oh btw any font on your computer can be installed via AnyFont. Also, you can download fonts from the net, via safari, and choose open in/with --> anyfont and install that way. You dont *have* to use itunes)

I have problems with Office documents because of missing fonts making the documents less readable, which is why I'm thinking of buying this app. But I'm still reluctant because this is messing with the system, even if it's in a way that is allowed. And once I install one font, another one will be missing, then another, and in the end it may be just simpler to continue converting to pdf before I load the docs on my iPad.

If you have no need to edit the document on your iPad then converting to PDF makes the most sense.

AnyFont is nothing more than a portal. The only time it is used is to copy fonts over to the iPad. Once they're copied, you never have to launch it again. It's safe.

The more that I use MS Office (Surface 2, iPad, Windows notebook, iMac) the more I'm appreciating the cross-platform support/capabilities.

Thanks. I bought the app last night, now I just have to figure out which fonts I need to install and do it. I could have lived without it but if it works and lets me, for instance, open a Powerpoint doc received by email and view it correctly, it's a nice comfort to have for 1.79 euros.

Therein lies the problem with PP, Excel, and Doc files we receive from others. You never know what fonts they will contain. Some people choose strange are rare fonts, when it would make better sense to use the most common system fonts so that almost anyone can view the file the way it was intended to be viewed. That pretty, special font might look nice on their device, but it just looks like crap on the devices everyone else has because we don't have their font.

I agree that if you only want to display a document on an iPad or iPhone, converting it to a PDF is the way to go. I set up a custom page size for iPhone at 3" x 5.3" with a 0.1" margin all around. it works really well with the 4" iPhone 5 or later. A 3 to 4 format ratio works well with the iPad, though it is big enough that it isn't as important to use a special page size.

Here is a page sample from a storm spotter manual I created for use on the iPhone. (It is an actual screen capture from my iPhone 5.)
