Bristol man gets revenge by texting works of Shakespeare to rogue internet seller

Quote:
A Bristol graphic designer who was ripped off by an internet seller has turned to Shakespeare to get his revenge.

Edd Joseph, 24, who lives in the city with his girlfriend, was furious when he bought a PS3 games console for £80 and the seller failed to deliver the goods.

So Edd decided to take his revenge by sending him the entire works of the Bard - by text.

Edd discovered he could copy the words from the internet and paste them into a text message - without costing him a penny on his unlimited mobile phone package.

He sends it as one text but his victim can only receive them in 160 character chunks - meaning the 37 works of Shakespeare will buzz through in 29,305 individual texts.

I just had to pass this one on. It's definitely a new use for the works of the immortal bard. I had no idea an ebook (at least the text file version) could be sent via text like that. I don't know if it would be practical as a method of reading a book in general or not though. I think I'll stick to the Kindle or other similar ebook devices.

It will be over in three days most likely.

Thanks for reminding me, I have unlimited texting now, so have to turn on all my social stuff to send there.

No, harassment is the person who has my number on their group text list and has ignored multiple requests to remove it, so I get a dozen texts a day from some kind of community project group or something, full of times for meetings and rehearsals or whatever. Since it was completely uncalled for...

This guy stole money and is just getting asked to give it back, in a way, I guess...

Does Mr. Joseph do requests, I wonder???

I have this idea of using legal means to resolve disputes. Crazy, I know.

Today, they featured this on the BBC radio news.
It has a certain style about it, a very British way of getting revenge.
Be interesting to know if it worked or not.

I don't see how this works. My mobile allows me to send >160 characters at once (although I've never tried to send anything really large) and when I receive >160 characters it recreates the single message that was sent (ditto for receive). Unlimited SMS send is typical now in most mobile contracts (and a lot of the PAYG) and it doesn't cost anything to receive SMS.

If it came through as a single (very long) SMS then deleting it is only a few key presses.

I think in the US you often pay to receive messages, and that would be a real killer for the miscreant, but there I guess there'd be some sort of legal comeback for the financial loss he suffered. I'm ignoring the financial loss of the sender at this point....

I may carry out some experiments. Apologies in advance to my long-suffering wife!

Unless he has access to the victim's phone (unlikely) I can't see how he knows that for sure; isn't it more likely that the messages will be recreated as a single message by the receiver?

Nope - he's using a web interface to send the message.

There are a bunch of places where you can send a text message from your computer and they all break extra-long messages down into multiple messages. I've done it myself, just not to that extent.

Yep. My cell phone can only hold 160 characters in a message. I get daily verses from my Pastor and if it's long enough instead of 1 text it arrives as at least 2 of them. Of course each message is charged for when I open it though it comes out even for me as I'm on Safelink so I get 2 hrs of free cell phone each month and the time carries over so I don't really notice a minute here or there being deducted.

Would it not be more cost effective to buy your own copy of the Bible rather than have someone else text it to you a verse at a time?
