My new Kobo has paragraph problems!

Hello folks,

I've recently purchased a Kobo Aura HD and am attempting to shift out of the Amazon ecosystem and opt for a more -- shall we say -- transparent experience with fewer and lower walls and wilder growth in my reading garden. This is the epub reader that I chose, but now I'm having a bit of an issue with layouts.

To begin with, titles just aren't as pretty as they are on the Kindle 3, but that's something that I can easily live with -- the rest of the experience, including my adventures with calibre, has been nice so far. I'm just having one infuriating problem...

If there's a paragraph that looks as though it would have gone past the end of the 'page', my Kobo leaves a large blank space at the bottom of the screen and then begins that paragraph once I turn the 'page'. I don't know if this only happens on side-loaded ebooks, as I only have side-loaded ebooks at this stage (due to all my purchased coming from Amazon thus far).

It's very annoying. I'm not sure if it's a deal-breaker or not yet. I'm hoping there's an obvious setting I've ignored. Please help!

It sounds like the effect of the long paragraph bug in the epub reader, but might also be the widows/orphans settings in the book.

Kobo devices have seperate readers for Adobe epub (epub) and Kobo epub (kepub) format books. The long paragraph bug affects epub books which have paragraphs longer than one full screen of text. It doesn't affect the kepub reader. One approach to avoid this problem is to sideload your books from Calibre in kepub format using the Kobo Touch Extended driver. The other approach is to apply the page break patch for your firmware version, which often (but not always) fixes the problem for epub format books.

To find out about using the Kobo Touch Extended driver to sideload kepub format books see: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=211135

For instructions to apply patches to firmware version 3.2.0 see: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=234764

The widows/orphans settings for the book can cause a paragraph to be pushed forward to the next page to avoid a single line being displayed at the bottom ot top of the page. The most noticable effect of this is the extra few blank lines at the bottom of a page. You can turn this feature off by adding the line p,div {orphans:0;widows:0;} to the Extra CSS field in the Calibre Look and Feel conversion settings before converting the book.

Thank you GeoffR.

Now I'm having another problem! I've tried to inset a SanDisk 8GB microSD into the reader. It keeps telling me that it can't read the card and that I need to reformat it to Fat32 -- but it already is Fat32! I've tried reformatting the card but keeping it as Fat32, then I formatted it to exfat and back to fat32...

It just won't read it, and it's definitely an issue with the Kobo. The card is fine and works in everything else I've plugged it into. The microSD card slot is one of the main reasons I bought a Kobo!

I haven't come across this problem myself, but others have had success using the SD Association formatting software to format the card: https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/

Hi GeoffR,

I just wanted to drop in to thank you again for your helpful posts. I haven't begun to sort out my microSD card problem yet, but I downloaded the Kobo Touch Extended driver at your suggestion in order to change the format, and my paragraph problems appear to be a thing of the past.

Using SD Association formatting software full overwrite formatting mode option is what worked for me.
