OK..

I have had a Gemstar RCA ebook ( geb 1150) ofr years..matter of fact still have a spare one in closet incase this one breaks!

Absolutely love it! Cant tell you how often at work or during the nite when wife is sleeping..or when sitting in car outside store while wife shops that i have thanked my lucky stars i had it to read..in particular in bad or no lite!

Problems now are getting to be batterry life and dealing with uploading books and Vista...

ie It dont owrk...and i know my days are numbered....so...

1> What models are there out there that will give me grey scale readibility AND are backlite ( a MUST!)

2. Did i remember reading that there is some company that is making a replacement for the 1150???

Isn't the eBookWise the succesor to this machine. Or is it the same machine. Not sure that it would work with Vista though, but don't know why it wouldn't.

Yes the ebookwise is the successor to the GEB 1150..think it was someone who bought all the old stock up and rebadged them....

However, when i first found this forum i thought i read some posts about a company that was developing a new ebook that was backlit, low priced, used REB type files etc....

ANd re vista...its mainly software...have spent a LOT of timet rying to get it to work ( geb librarian & original software)...no luck...tried compatibility mode , different ports, etc....nope.

and the expandable memory? Smart media...tuff to find and expensive already...so kinda rules out using a card reader....

So i guess maybe my question should be more along the lines of..what ebook readers are in the works for relaese this year or so? esp ones iwht backlites?

Device: eb1150 & is that a nook in her pocket, or she just happy to see you?
i have an eb1150, which if i've understood correctly is more or less the same *hardware* as the GEB 1150 but quite different in software. check the wiki (link at the top left of the page) for specific information, there are pages there giving lots of information about both of these devices. there is also a thread comparing the 2. i love my eb1150 (although personally i wish it *weren't* backlit ), and i would recommend it to you in a second as a replacement for your GEB, however i'm not sure about the format compatibility.

the good news is, ETI (who make the eb1150) are working on a new version of the eb1150 with an e-ink screen. they know that a lot of their current users love the backlight, so i'm not positive, but i think they are looking for a solution to that in the e-ink model. you can read more about that by looking at this thread and also following the link near the end.

the "fictionwise ebookwise" sub-forum has a lot of other useful info as well. and we have some very knowledgeable members who will be able to answer pretty much any question you can imagine...
