Should I let my PC scan my Kindle?
This started this morning, when every time I connect my Kindle to my PC (and wtih calibre running), I fist get this message:
"Do you want to scan and fix Kindle (E): There might be a problem with some files on this device or disk. This can happen if you remove the device or disk before all files have been written to it." I click 'Cancel' and there's no problem. But since this just started, I'm wondering if by clicking "Scan and Fix," that I won't see this screen again. Thanks. |

Yes, do a "scan and fix", and in future don't unplug the Kindle without using the "Safely Remove Hardware" item in the system tray!

Thanks, Harry. ![]() True, I got a bit carried away and disconnected my Kindle before it apparently had finished copying. This action did fix the problem, though. However, I've always used calibre itself to safely remove hardware, as that option is certainly available. Do you think I should avoid that option? |

I get that message every time I connect any of my flashdrives, or my Kindle. I've tried scanning and fixing all of them at least 5 times each, and they always report a clean bill of health. Then they proceed to bug me about it every time in the future as well.
I can -- temporarily -- fix the problem by reformatting and restoring from a backed-up folder of my stuff. But since nothing is actually wrong, I don't bother. Linux doesn't have a problem with it, Windows insists that it's all right but wants to bug me about it anyway. I just chalk it up to Windows being really stupid (because I don't like Windows much, anyway) and click cancel every time I connect flash storage devices of any type to Windows. EDIT: And yes, I conscientiously use the "Safely Remove Hardware" button for my Kindle, and the Eject feature of PortableApps which uses the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature somehow. So: Quote:
EDIT2: It didn't make a difference which computer I used, either, at least 8 computers running either WinXP, Win7, or Win8 all failed in the same way. Last edited by eschwartz; 03-21-2014 at 04:12 PM. |

When I eject it using Calibre, it removes the kindle from My Computer also.

I get that message every time I plug my Sony 350 into my computer--doesn't happen with my 650, PW or any flashdrives, just the 350. I've tried "fixing it", but still get the same message so now I just ignore it. The 350 works just fine and I've been getting that message every time I connect for well over a year now.

Of course, you might not feel comfortable doing that kind of stuff; heck, I don't want to do it either, and it's MY link! Just not worth my time, really... |

I use Windows 8.1 and have never seen any of my Kindles showing in the Safely Remove Hardware menu. However, I never use Calibre and that may trigger the requirement.
If Calibre has its own Safely Remove Hardware selection, that would probably be the best way to close the session since it would also close Calibre. The Scan and Fix option would probably close any files left open from a prior session. Last edited by sirmaru; 03-21-2014 at 09:54 PM. |

Calibre - the program - does not close when you eject the Kindle (or any ebook reader) using calibre.
All it does is to safely eject one's ereader. Anyway, that's my experience with using calibre, which is a fine program in my estimation. The problem is that I got over-zealous and thought the file had been copied and then I ejected my Kinde when, in fact, it had not been copied completely. |
