Two settlements affecting Apple

See this link to the NYT Times (one must be registered with the NY Times to read it) about two settlements where customers were taken advantage of by Apple:

http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/0...=15417582&_r=0

That is part of the many reasons I won't buy any Apple products and have not done so since the first TRS-80 I purchased in 1978.

If it is behind a paywall, maybe you should either find another source or else quote relevant passages here?

There is no paywall. Just register with the NY Times at their site and you can read it.

I get the NY Times delivered free to my email box every day only covering subjects interesting to me and showing headlines and brief summaries of each article..

I believe they allow you to read 10 full articles free each month and then start nagging for you to pay for a full subscription. However, they don't stop you from reading more than 10 per month. My email only has the headlines of the articles and I must click on the link to read them.

It is well worth it to register.

However, it would violate their copyright to copy and paste from those full articles and I will comply with their copyright privileges.

It's only behind a paywall if you've already viewed the max free articles for the month. No registration needed, they track views by cookie, I think. I'm not logged in and I can see it.

But it just covers the settlement regarding the in-app purchases (where kids were able to make large purchases) and the already-well-covered ebook settlement.

As the article also mentions Amazon as paying customers back as a result of one of the cases, can we assume that your standards don't permit you to buy from Amazon either...

The article is lot of words for just a few sentences.
That Amazon automatically credited their customers for the eBook settlement where as Apple is asking customers to apply for the refund in the in-app purchase settlement.

And, of course, Apple have to do this as not all In-app purchases covered, were made by kids using their parents ID to make the purchases (which is the reason for the settlement)... some (probably most) were made by users/players of the games making purchases for themselves and who knew what they were doing... the Amazon refunds are easily automated because they relate to any purchase of the relevant books...

Yep.

You also probably had to contact Apple support about it to even get the original e-mail about it. I got it because I was complaining about some currency that my mom had bought that wasn't going through and the gam instead freezing. I ignored it though, my bank had already given me a refund.

Even if you had an iPad, you probably wouldn't even be using the iBookstore. I don't, and nor do a lot of people. That goes along with Newsstand.

This e-book settlement does nothing except give people money to buy more books. Other than the people who filed it, no one (except frugal consumers eager for free cash) gave a darn about it, and would have easily gone without a complaint for their rest of their lives as if nothing was wrong.

You agreed to the price to begin with when you clicked the buy button after all.

Hmm, didn't realize it wasn't a paywall, since I Pocketed it anyway -- I prefer to read stuff that way, and it usually penetrates paywalls.

Anyway, yeah, same old story, they're reimbursing us for agency pricing, nothing new here, moving right along....

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the TRS-80 is a Tandy Radio Shack (TRS) product and not Apple.

I can't believe people didn't get refunds right away. When I first got my iPad my then 3yo bought a few things in a game he was playing. When I saw the bill I was horrified that a young child could do that and super pissed.

I called Apple and demanded my money back, and they gave it back, along with instructions on how to require a password for in-app purchases or disable them completely. Personally I think in-app purchases should require a password by default.

Bought TRS 80 instead of Apple 2

I had purchased the TRS-80 from Radio Shack back in 1978 since it was cheaper than the Apple 2.
