I don't use protection on my e-readers.

No, just use a book-style case so that the screen is protected in transit. Screen protectors can interfere with infrared touch, and don't protect the fragilest part anyway (glass screen substrate). Your biggest risks are temperature extremes, bending/twisting, and impact, and screen protectors do nothing.
I don't use a screen protector on any of my iDevices, either, and haven't since the iPhone 1. The gorilla glass is incredibly scratch-resistant. I guess if I was routinely throwing them in a pocket with keys and tools I might, but that seems to me a rather terrible way to treat any electronic device. |

But my e-ink ereaders are not protected, they already have that matte finish. |

Your wife is incorrect. You do not need a screen protector for your Kobo. What you do need is a good case.

Here's a thread where helpful experts here said that it likely doesn't offer any protection against breakage of the glass substrate, i.e., no real cushioning against screen breakage like it would provide on a cell phone screen.
That only leaves scratches and scuffs. My screen protector was so reflective that I couldn't stand it anymore and removed it. It was the clear type. The matte type should be a little less transparent, and in that case, you have to ask yourself if you want to have even a slightly less clear screen. I now have migrated to a combination of a carrying case like a sleeve where I can easily extract the reader and use it naked, and careful handling. |
