Kobo software on Amazon Fire?

Just curious, can the Kobo software still be installed on a standard (non-rooted) Amazon Fire (HD 6)? I keep finding links to the Kobo Apk, but they seem dead, and I'm leery of trusting some of the sites anyhow. What's odd is that GetJar worked fine for the Nook software, but when I try to download the Kobo software I get redirected to the Amazon App Store by the Fire which, of course, goes nowhere.

Thanks for any pointers.

You can sideload the Kobo apk and it runs with no trouble at all.

You can download this directly onto the Fire and download free apps from there. I did. Just don't get something that you also got from the Amazon store as you'll get conflicting update requests as invariably 1market has a newer version. I uninstalled it for that reason.

For some reason my family filters on OpenDNS have it blocked? I guess I'll have to make an exception for it. Thanks.

Once I cleared the family filters on OpenDNS I was able to download the market app and get Kobo and AirDroid. (I thought I needed AirDroid because Android KitKat no longer lets you talk to devices as mass storage, but it appears that the Fires still work "properly." Happy to know that. Makes life easier on Linux.) Can't figure out why the Kobo App was 43 MBs and (I believe) the Nook App was only 7 or 8 MBs.

But, anyhow, everything's good. Thanks for the help.

Are you sure about that? I have installed the Kobo app on my Fire and I have found it to be only half compatible....the homescreen icons do not respond to touch

You're right, they no longer work -- I thought it worked at first? (Maybe I'm wrong about that.) Weird. The issue can be bypassed by going to the Menu and selecting the Books View, however.

EDIT: Now the Home Page icons are working again? Weird. So I didn't misremember this after all.

Belatedly: really? That's good news if so. Has there been any update to the app?

It works fine on my KF HDX, sideloaded ( expect that you cant flip the controls to left handed, so I have switched to using mantano premium)
I got it free & legit from google play, as I also have a kobo tablet, then I used the get apk chrome extension to get a copy into dropbox on PC & hence to kindle Fire.
I'm not sure how to do it 100% safely if you only have the one tablet, without risking rogue sites.

its no use going to the kobo site as that just sends you to google play, which kindle fire cannot access.

if you do go to dark site, then put a good free AV onto Kindle ( like malwarebytes) and/or use the site that lets you upload any apk for a free virus check- google will find you that one, and be very careful what you download via PC , many of those sites will do their best to infect your PC via fake "download managers" , & such.

PS the Kobo app updates every few months. it wont auto -update on a Kindle, you will have to go back around the whole dance, but you can read newest reviews at google play to see if there's any compelling reason to update.
My version is quite old now, so it lacks the recent stuff which is there only to sell you more kobo store books !

1mobile looks like a chinese site to me. their bad english is one giveaway.

not necessarily bad, but China is not renowned for respecting western copyrights.

so long as they don't have your credit card number you should be OK

I did a test search for Mantano reader & found only the free versions, and only the demo version of calibre companion, so they are not blatantly giving away paid apps

if everything is free, how can they be making any money though ?
