New user introduction

Actually I'm not a user yet - I joined the forum because I'm interested in getting an ebook reader, and I want to do some research.

I'm a 68 year old married retired psychiatrist, interested in classical music and opera (and trying to learn to play the oboe and the piano) and biography and science fiction. In fact the stimulus to do something about getting an ebook was a review of Lois McMaster Bujold's new book on her fansite. The book will take forever to get to Tasmania, and I have read comments that people have already downloaded it and read it.

Regards, Alex

Hi AlexBell and welcome to the Forum. Nice to have another senior citizen on board. Where in Tasmania do you live? I've been to Hobart and Launceston. Absolutely beautiful and the best seafood ever. Beer pretty decent too!

Lots of free SciFi books around.

Hi Alex

If you are interested in specifications, the mobile read wiki has information on the major products here - https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/E-book_Reader_Matrix

Also you can go here http://www.my-ebooks.com.au/Ebook%20...omparison.html to find where you can get them in Australia. (Please note that this is my site so the views expressed are mine and mine alone).

Any questions, please feel free to let me know.

Cheers

Mark

Many thanks for your welcomes, and especially to you mark for the URL for your site which looks to be very helpful. I have been leaning towards the Bookeen Cybook Gen 3, but I'll review the others before deciding.

Hi Alex. Pleasure to be of assistance and the Cybook I think would be a very good choice, it can be a little on the hard to get side though. For an Australian user its the cheapest of the DRM (mobipocket) compatible devices.

One from left field, have you looked at an eeePC? Not an e-ink device nor a dedicated reader as such, but a very good all round tool that is about the same price. Can support mobipocket, adobe support is comming this year, wifi capable, nearly 9" screen (on the 900) I believe and its a much more flexible and a very portable device. I only say this becuase I have just ordered one to benchmark against my ectaco.

Oh, and another thing, Jinke (hanlin) have released a V3 model in europe with mobi support so you might want to check with them if it is being released generally. I personally think mobipocket support will make this a very good unit.

Anyway, let me know how you go and feel free to email or PM if you have any more questions.

Cheers

Mark
