Calibre's editor works absolutely fine for me. What benefits does Sigil have over it?

Cant say... Calibre is new to the game and I have not had a chance to vet it. I have been using Sigil for a long time before Calibre got any editing at all. I love Calibre for other features, so I will have to investigate this at some point... On big benefit is in Sigil's simplicity though. I can right click an epub and put "open in Sigil" and boom, I am right in to the source. Calibre takes more steps.

You can do exactly the same in Calibre's editor. Select "Open With..." and choose the "ebook-edit.exe" executable. Henceforward, that will appear on your "Open With" menu.

I agree VydorScope, it is sad to see it let go. I expect I will still continue to use it for some time yet, since it does pretty much everything I need already (in a neat, fast and simple to use program) and I can't see my needs changing dramatically in the near future. I haven't looked at Calibre's contribution to editing yet. I've never been a big fan of the Calibre - this is partly just a taste thing, I'm not trying to be critical - but I do use it occasionally for some functions that are difficult to find elsewhere. |

You don't need to use any other part of Calibre in order to use the editor. It's a totally standalone program.

Thanks Harry, I will probably take a look at it sometime (out of curiosity if nothing else for now).

Thanks to Valoric (Strahinja Markovic) for starting this wonderful project and to user_none (John Schember) for taking over when Valoric could no longer work on it. Sigil is still the best ePub editor available, though calibre's editor is catching up fast. |

Although Sigil won't be getting any more updates, it is currently very stable and very few bugs left unswatted. I fully expect it to be usable for a very long time to come for straight-forward epub2 books, particularly fiction books. I expect to still be using it next year this time. Now, as epub3 features come more to the fore, it will have to be phased out, but at the rate that epub3 readers are becoming available, I don't think Sigil is quite in its final death throes just yet. This is to take nothing away from the rapidly developing Calibre Editor, I'm just saying Sigil is still a *very* viable option for epub2. I don't think we need to erect a tombstone in the next 5 minutes... |

It's always sad to see a well loved project go. Without Sigil, I might not even have started e-reading. Every book I buy needs to have *something* fixed, sometimes as small as replacing maps with a higher resolution version, but others need a complete overhaul to be readable. I couldn't have done it without Sigil. Thanks for the work done. That said, Calibre's editor is shaping up fast, and works in a very similar way. The one thing it does better than Sigil, is opening large books. No hitch at all, even Delphi Classics of 20K pages and 100MB in size can be edited. If you tried that with Sigil, your computer would explode. Last edited by Katsunami; 02-15-2014 at 08:52 AM. |

This actually happens with open source projects that are popular often.

Will miss Sigil. So simple. So efficient. Such great feedback for non-technical people like me. And, like many, glad Calibre is coming along.
