What stays on the cloud?

If I delete books from my PW, will they still be in the cloud? And can I re-load them?

Books that you've bought from Amazon, or books that you've emailed to Amazon, yes. Books that you've loaded via USB, no.

You can turn off archiving if for some reason you don't want books you've mailed to your Kindle to remain in the cloud.

When you delete it, it will have the option "Remove" if it will be stored in the cloud. If it is a sideloaded book and doesn't match to your Cloud, then it will say "Delete" instead, and you will be prompted to confirm.

@bsekf
If you delete a book that you sideloaded to PW (and the book has already been indexed) using Kindle command Delete than copy of this book will stay on your Kindle by another name, something like .fuse_hidden000062bb0000001d. That's not all: folder book_name.sdr with two files inside also stay put. If you are not careful and do not clean after deletion than sooner or later all reader memory will be filled to capacity.

@EbokJunkie: The fuse 'ghost' files will disappear on their own when the system judges it safe to do so. (usually, at framework shutdown). [It's an artefact of the way the user-fronting storage space is handled to support USBMS]

That still leaves the sidecar files/folder, though, but they're much less space-hungry than the books themselves.

Delete it from the "Manage Your Kindle" page at Amazon.

But can't you buy a book from Amazon and "Deliver it to your PC" and load it to the Kindle using USB?

Is that book lost forever if you delete it from the Kindle device?

Yes, you can do that, and no, the book isn't lost if you delete it from your Kindle. It remains on Amazon's server for you to download again.

No it's not lost because you've bought it from Amazon, therefore it'll still be in the cloud.

It doesn't matter how you get the book you've bought from Amazon onto your Kindle (delivered wirelessly, emailed to your Kindle, downloaded to your PC and sideloaded using USB), you've bought it from Amazon so it's stored in the cloud.

[edit: too slow., so just to echo what HarryT said!]

Ahh, OK, so when Harry T says: "Books that you've loaded via USB, no.", this only applies to books purchased from sites such as SmashWords, etc.?

Yes, I was referring to books you've obtained from places other than Amazon.

OK thanks.

Are there any tutorials available on managing and downloading Kindle books?

I'm a Kobo owner and understand that quite well, but I just ordered a Kindle PW and admit to being confused by the Amazon website.

I can't find a BUY NOW or ADD TO CART button for Kindle books?

I also don't understand the selection of "Deliver to PC" vs "Deliver to Kindle" - why do I have to choose, and can't I do both?

The Kobo seems so much easier...

You can only do one at a time - either deliver to PC, to be copied over via USB, or sent directly to the Kindle, via wi-fi or 3G, depending on which model Kindle you have, and which connectivity you have set up.

You cannot add ebooks to a cart on Amazon.

Each Kindle book page will have a "Buy now with 1-click" button on it, with a pull-down list for you to select the Kindle or app to download the book to. Just select which device/app you want the book to go to (or download and transfer via USB), and click the one-click button. Bang, you've bought the book, and it will be delivered to your Kindle (or downloaded to your pc, after you select which device you want it for).
