Mini 3.1.1 not for Kobo Mini?

Hi everyone,

I might have made a mistake... I've been looking up on the web for the latest version we can install on the Kobo Mini and I did not find anything... so I installed the 3.1.1 but the system is very unstable.

Can I install a previous firmware? Which one is the latest for the Mini?

The last firmware that has been release for the Mini is 2.6.2. A lot of people installed 2.8.1 without any problems. I don't remember how 2.9.0 or 2.10.0 went. But, from 3.0.0, there are problems with the home screen not displaying correctly.

The latest firmware officially released for the different models is:

Mini: 2.6.2
Touch: 3.0.1
Glo/Aura/AuraHD: 3.1.1

From others' reports, the Mini seems to work fine if 2.8.1 is sideloaded, but has some problems with later versions, in particular the cover images are too big and there are no menu options for Pocket access. Some Touches seem to work with 3.1.1 sideloaded, but others have problems, including loss of ability to connect via USB.

Generally, to install an earlier version of the firmware you will need to do a factory reset, then upgrade from the factory firmware to a later version. After the factory reset the device will automatically upgrade to the latest official version, so If the version you want to install is earlier than the latest official version then you need to connect to USB and during the upgrade process, manually replace the KoboRoot.tgz and files in the upgrade directory from the official firmware with those from the version you want to install.

JFYK: I successfully downgraded manually to 2.8.1 from 2.9.0, 2.10.0 and 3.1.1 and looking at the files in koboroot.tgz, all file changes will be reverted except there is an additional font installed with later firmwares which will not be removed, but this won't hurt IMO.

I have 3.1.1 on my Mini, and can confirm that the only problem is the outsized covers in the home screen. True, accessing Pocket is cumbersome, but it is also the case that latest firmware version for the Mini has no Pocket at all - in my case, I am ok with what is to me a mild inconvenience. However as 3.1.1 is not supposed to go on the Mini, I would not recommend sideloading it to those who don't want to risk wasting a lot of time with copying book, annotations for sideloaded books etc. in case they want to roll back, precisely because of the need of a factory reset in that case.

I've been a bit out of the loop since last summer... Did they finally put Pocket onto the Kobo Mini? Which firmware version did it show up on (and which is the most stable so far)?

This thread contains the latest status for the Mini. No new firmware, but 3.1.1 sort of works.

Download from here, unzip and put koboroot.tgz file in the .kobo folder on your mini:

After safe-removing usb connection, it will apply the update.

Yes, 2.8.1 is stable. I don't know what advantages it offers over the previous version.
