Boomarks

I fail to see of what use books marks are on my kindle. When I turn off my kindle, then re-start it sometime later it always starts where I left off. So I really do not see of what use books marks are. I do not see any command to go to a book mark.

Bookmarks are bookmarks. Have you never used sticky notes throughout a book before?

On the PW2, simply tap the top right corner of the screen to see all the bookmarks in the current book.

I would guess that people would use bookmarks far more frequently in a non-fiction book than in a novel. I mostly use bookmarks to mark favorite recipes in cookbooks.

Perhaps "bookmark" is not the ideal word. It's not like the bookmark you place in a paper book to mark the point at which you left off reading. It's more like a tag that you use to mark points of interest that you might want to refer back to another time. As others have said, they're more useful for non-fiction than for fiction.

Personally, I don't use them all that much, but I wouldn't like to have to manage without them.

Bookmarks are, ideally, user-defined navigation points to make it easier to jump around to places of interest (and not just TOC locations). The 'analog' version of this is dog-earing a page or placing colored tabs in a book to identify points of interest.

Finally with the PW2 and 3rd generation Fire tablets, they have their own navigation list. Before they were mixed in with highlights and notes which rendered them somewhat less usable (though you could filter the Notes and Marks list to show just bookmarks).

For titles that support Whispersync for voice, bookmarks can also establish navigation points in the audiobook to make it easier to locate passages things there, since these get synched along with reading position.

They're especially useful for reference books.

I like Jessica's statements, and no I have never written a sticky in all my reading life. However my great aunt used to so I can see that the book marks would replace those sticky notes that my late great aunt used to make.
