Aura HD Advice Needed

Last summer I bought an Aura HD and was very happy with it. I used it for a few months until one morning, as I was groggily preparing to head to class, I forgot that the pocket on the laptop bag I kept it in was not zipped up and managed to drop it onto the floor. My Aura now has an unresponsive horizontal bar right across the middle of the screen.

Being unable to afford a new HD, I am hoping that one of you might have a suggestion as to how to get it repaired/exchanged. I bought it from chapters.indigo.ca. What should I do? Do I have any options or am I out of luck?

Unfortunately, you're likely out of luck. Kobo's warranty doesn't cover physical damage, as is clearly the case here.

Not only does Kobo not cover impact damage on their warranty, but the process of repair (opening the device up, changing screen, etc) would void any warranty that was left. You'll find that even if you do find a way to repair it it's unlikely to be cost-effective, unless you do it yourself (and even then, you could question the value, but YMMV). Maybe you could find a way to afford a secondhand Glo instead? Invest any available spare money in a good protective cover.

Hey, I went back and re read the original post. Does your screen work at all? Your complaint was actually of a horizontal black bar. Is it possible you don't have a cracked screen, but perhaps a connection or driver defect?

Then reason I ask is most cracked screens display diagonal artifacts not horizontal banding. Maybe post an image so the resident experts can get a look at it.

Here is a picture of my Aura. I had left it on a shelf since dropping it and when I went to get a picture of it, I discovered that the screen damage has changed. I included a red box approximately where the original damage appeared. I don't believe that I have bumped it significantly or dropped it since the screen broke so I don't know why it would have changed.

The light still works fine as does the touch sensitivity (I can select items that are in the broken area.)

I would have bought a cover for my Aura but I have not been able to find one that both fits it and doesn't require me to take it off to use the reader.

Bottom right corner is where your actual damage is (you can see the angle there), so yes it is a cracked screen after all. Personally I have never used a case on any of my e-ink devices and they have survived (touch wood) a few drops that hit corners. I think a case is more likely to help with a point pressure on the screen.

I know it is too late for you, but Chapters-Indigo has the fitted sleep cover cases for the Aura HD on sale for $25. I had been using my HD bare, but got a gift certificate recently and jumped on it.
