I would buy a Kindle in a heartbeat IF --->

I have had a Kindle Keyboard in the past and would buy another Kindle touch ereader IF just one little simple thing ---- I just want to be able to add extra storage. That's it.

I know people will say but you can store so many books and you can always download from the cloud. Well I'm one of those that likes to have everything on my ereader --- all my books, ya know just in case :-)

That's unlikely to happen. Best thing you can do is get a Fire, if you want a Kindle with decent storage.

I wonder why that is? I love the availability of books that Amazon offers and the free offers as well. Just kinda frustrating.

I currently use a Nook ST

I know what you mean! But they think people can just keep the books in the "cloud" and download at will. Not me, no thanks....I like to keep hundreds if not thousands on my device so that I can choose at will! Even the lowest priced Kindle Fire has 8gb, whilst the paperwhite has 2. Ridiculous, to someone like me. I won't buy any more 2gb devices.

The newest Kindle Fire HD, however, is absolutely wonderful to read on. There are 6 (I think) font choices. And you can now put the books in collections, though I haven't tried that (yet). Plus it's much faster than e-ink. I really think it is a good choice for reading (unless a person has a serious need for reading outdoors and long, long battery life). Plus with a Fire one can put the Nook app on to read Nook books, if one has them.

If they have another sale on the 16gb Fire HD for $119, I'll most likely get one. Maybe they will prior to Valentine's Day. If not, I'll wait.

Thanks for the tip... I love e-ink and long battery life so I dont mind having a dedicated ereader & a tablet.

I see you are an experienced forum member do you think you could look at the question I posted yesterday and see if you know the answer?

Sure, what is the question?

I definitely think having a tablet and a dedicated reader is a good idea! That way you have a backup.

Ok, checked it out. I don't think you can update anything after you've sent it, unless you are using a Kobo with some of the amazing Calibre plugins. I briefly had a NST this summer, but for me it worked better not using Calibre. The only workaround I can think of is to use something like SyncToy on your computer, and have all your books on the SD card, then save to a folder on your computer, and then sync it with the card. But that does seem like a lot of extra work. I think it would be most efficient just to re-send the book(s).

If you like to sideload, you can get Calibre Companion for a Kindle Fire or a Nook HD, and that will sync with Calibre on your computer. It is the best library management app I have found!

I've never heard of SyncToy so I will check that out. I bought Calibre Companion a while ago but haven't used it in a while. I'll have to check that back out as well.

I was trying to resend all my books to the Nook HD but it really wasn't letting me. So definitely gonna look at the Companion again.

Thanks

I'd buy a Kindle if they came out with a new model focused on repair-ability; easily replaceable batteries, screens and buttons.

I think Amazon is continually trying to skate the edge of what most of their users actually use on the Kindle, so they can keep their hardware costs at the absolute minimum price they can afford to sell it.

We've lost hardware keyboards, page-turn buttons, text-to-speech, the ability to play audio, speakers and an earphone jack, and the external SD card slot that only the first Kindle ever had, though that was before my time. Anything that may be cool and useful, but that they can ablate without damaging their market share, they'll strip away for what they see as the long-range good of the platform. And credit where credit is due, it seems to be working for them.

Kindles are also the only devices that I'm aware of whose memory size has been going down as the new models come out. I'm fortunate to live in Japan so my Paperwhite 2 has double the amount of memory that a normal one has (in other words, the same memory as my old Kindle Keyboard already has), but even so it's nowhere near enough to fit all my books. Apparently 1.25 GB is enough for your average reader. I'm guessing there aren't enough outliers (like your average MobileRead user) to produce an ereader with all the bells & whistles we'd love to have.

The other thing Amazon has going for it is the email conversion of PDFs and email delivery of web articles... it really is great.... I just need storage... lol

I wonder if the Japanese model would work?

It's enough for well over 1000 typical ebooks. Do you REALLY need to carry more than 1000 books around with you?
