Touch downgrade question
I still have a Kindle Touch (couldn't find proper prefix), and I realized that I have forgotten wifi on when I started to see again special offers. So it looks like my device updated itself to 5.3.7. So here comes questions:
1-) Can I downgrade it to older firmwares easily? 2-) Or even better, is there a hack to remove special offers for 5.3.7 firmware ? |

Firmware updates should have absolutely nothing to do with Special Offers.
But as mentioned previously, you can go to Manage Your Kindle and turn them off -- IF you have paid the additional $20 to opt out, then you can toggle them on and off. If not, then you will be prompted to pay the $20. (You can of course call Customer Service and do it that way. But it works just as well through the web interface.) I don't think the devs here are really a fan of removing Special Offers without Amazon's consent -- after all, they sell Kindles at a discounted price, in return for showing those ads. So what right do we have to remove them? |

you can get amazon to do it for free, if you are from a country where they do not really support, for example, russia.
you can contact amazon, with the live chat, and they may say they will do it, you will need to create an amazon account, and register the kindle. then then can turn off the SO. it is possible to create an email address on a russian mail site, i guess it would probably work without. just because your email address doesn't end in .ru doesn't mean you are not from russia lol. make sure you write in non-perfect english, just to seal the deal. (of course, i only advise this for people in a non supported country. doing this from america etc, would be morally wrong) -edit. i think you can do the live chat without being registered on amazon, so go to the live chat, tell them you have adverts but you cannot use them since you are in russia etc, they will walk you through what to do. you can stay on the live chat to them the whole duration when you are doing this, from start to finish, very kind people! No, it's because the poster isn't in the US. Remember that the special offers Kindle is only sold in the US, so those of us outside the US have no facility offered by Amazon to pay to disable the SO. Consequently, because we've no way to pay to turn off the SO, Amazon generally do it for us for free if asked. The same happened with me with my SO Touch, which I bought in the US.

oh that is nice, well i did read, i think on here, about some people from other countries, having to pay the equivalent of $20 in their own currency. i guess it is at amazon's discretion.

I'm sure it is at Amazon's discretion, yes, but I haven't personally heard of anyone outside the US being charged for it. I simply asked, and they did it free of charge for me.
