Hi, all. not sure this is in the right place but I have a problem with the new kindle paperwhite. I've just upgraded to the new one as my teen has long term borrowed my old one.
I'm beginning to hate the new paperwhite, it won't let me use calibre and wants to connect to the net every few mins. Someone on another thread suggested I jailbreak it before the urge to smash it overcomes me, however I'm not sure how to or what the benefits would be, I have firmware: 5.4.2.1. Is jailbreaking easy? Are there step by step instructions and most important of all would I get to use calibre again? Please help! ![]() |

What do you mean "it won't let me use Calibre"? In what way is your Paperwhite preventing you from using Calibre?

How does it stop you using Calibre? You can turn off the wireless networking.
I wouldn't get into jailbreaking until you work out the basic functions! |

I like to use calibre for all my books including amazon content which I download via usb and transfer to calibre then to my kindle. However doing it this way the amazon content wont open and tells me I have to download from the cloud even with wi-fi turned off. My PW2 will not let me use the calibre library, I know the functions I've had other kindles including the old paperwhite which worked just fine.

I suppose the problem is that the Kindle Collections plugin doesn't work with PW2.
That could be fixed by installing Collections Manager and using Niluje's improved plugin for Calibre. Jailbreaking PW2 is very easy, easier than it was before. It's just copying one file and selecting a menu item on Kindle. Kindle doesn't even reboot. Collections Manager itself is just a 'book' with active content. Just visit the Collections Manager thread and follow instructions. |

You're doing something wrong. There's lots of us here (me included) happily using Calibre with the PW2.
What format are you sending your books to the Kindle in? |

Are these books which you downloaded from Amazon before you got your PW2?

I think they were copied to Calibre from PW1 - that explains the problems.
DRM is linked to device ID of PW1 and the books are refused on the new PW2. |

Exactly - that's the point I was aiming at. You can't download a book for one Kindle and then send it to another if the book has DRM. Hence my earlier advice to get the help of our good friend Alf in removing the DRM.

Apprentice Alf's tools only do their job when you add the books into Calibre. As HarryT says, read up on Apprentice Alf and then re-add your books into Calibre.
