New epub reader app
Hi,

I wanted to inform you about the new free EPUBReader Android app (still beta), which is based on the Firefox add-on with the same name.

The EPUBReader app has now left beta status and is available at Google play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ead.epubreader. To run it, as minimum Android 3 (Honeycomb) is needed.

I just installed it and broke it before I even got to try it. Nexus 7 LTE 4.3.1

Thanks for your feedback! This error was caused by an invalid epub file. I improved now the handling of invalid files and uploaded a new version (1.0.17) to Google Play. When you have installed the new version and tap on "Scan" in the action bar, your epub files should be listed now.

Very fast, but looses valuable space with the left right arrows and above and below balks and only has two non-customisable black white themes. In landscape chapter selection doesn't seem to work. I can live with the themes but loosing space on a telephone screen is unacceptable.

In future releases it will be possible to adjust the margins. In my opinion the arrows are needed because they indicate if a page follows or precedes and of course there is some space needed for them.

In future releases it will also be possible to change the background and font color to the color of your choice.

What happens if you select a chapter in landscape?

How was it caused by an invalid epub when all I did was open the app? I never tried to open an epub. I was about to kill the app because 15-20 seconds had passed with nothing happening.

When you start the app the first time, it scans all epub files on your device which means that metadata is extracted from every file so title and author can be displayed. If important files are missing in an ebook, errors can occur during metadata extraction and these errors were not handled correctly.

Depending on the number of ebooks stored on your device scanning can take several seconds. Did you see the spinning wait cursor when you started the app or just a white screen?

I saw the spinning cursor but since all I did was open the app I wouldn't expect it to scan my device without it prompting me to do so.

Now it can't find any books and I have over 500. I hit scan and nothing came back.

Are your ebooks in the epub format and have got the file extension "epub"? Could you open the ebooks with another reader? Did you store them just recently on your sdcard?

I'm not trying to be mean, but I'm not sure where this app fits in its genre. There are many well established ePub reading app, and they all blow this one out of the water as far as formatting options go, and lots of formatting options seem to be the main feature that make these other ePub reading apps so popular. It will take a lot of effort to match or best Mantano and some of the others as they are lightyears more advanced than this one. Plus this one seems rather buggie still.

At least one of the other big-name readers, Moon+, is notable for NOT displaying the book according the formatting information in the CSS within the book. It would be good to have another reader that displays the book correctly, according to the instructions within it, rather than according to the reading app's idea of how it should be displayed.

Flexible formatting is good, but not if it gets in the way of the way the book creator has specified that the book should be displayed, which is definitely the case with Moon+.
