Synching between Calibre 1.19 and Kindle Touch

Each time that I upload books (mobi format) to my Kindle (running 5.3.7) I run into the same problem that I cannot see the books on the Kindle. Eventually I give up, and force the Kindle to reindex by deleting the files from the Search Indexes directory. But there must be some better solution this problem. Perhaps I am not doing something correctly?

Also (perhaps connected to above problem) I only see my books as Docs, and not as Books. If I select All Items, I get zero items (which seems crazy: surely All Items is everything from Books, Periodicals, Audible, Docs, etc?)
