How to journal?
Hi all, I recently started journalling and I'm really enjoying it. I'm going away for work for a couple weeks and during these couple weeks I want to send my journal back to my mom so she can read what I've been doing.
I want to know how I can improve my journal writing. Could anyone recommend a good for me to read? I'd really love to read something like 'a soldier at war's diary', like a soldier at the front in World War 1 so I can get a better feel of how to write a journal. Please help me. |

I don't think there is a 'better way' or even 'a way' to write a journal. It should be yours, what you want to express, record, remember perhaps.

Journaling is as different as the person doing it. Journaling is an expression of your soul, whether that is words, pictures in the book, newspaper clippings, etc.
It is like asking "what is the correct way to be a human?" :-) |

Try googling "The Diary of..." and see what comes up. You'll find several in the public domain. Read a few, but remember that these were written by a select group of people at a time when literacy was not widespread and letter writing was common.
Your "letters" to your mother should be personal, about how you feel concerning your experiences and the people you meet. Because your mother will be reading this, you may find yourself editing out some of the more unpleasant events/thoughts, you may wish her to feel that you're having a great time. The problem with writing for someone to read as opposed to writing for a private journal is that you can't be truly honest, you have to think of the reader. In a personal journal you would just write what your thoughts/events really were. For your mother you will have to apply the "mother filter". We all do it. |

Moved to the Writers' forum, where the writers may be able to offer more specific advice.

A journal which particularly inspired me was "A Writer's Diary" by Virginia Woolf. You'll find it in the MR library in her Complete Works.
This is of interest to those who want to write. I'll have a quick look for soldiers' diaries. What about "The Diary of Anne Frank"? Just google "War diaries" (without the quote marks) and loads of possibilities can be found. Last edited by BookCat; 01-05-2014 at 04:42 PM. Reason: More recommendations |

I realise that she wasn't writing from a war situation, but I hardly think you can doubt that Virginia Woolf was a quality writer.
And Anne Frank's diary has become part of the history of the second world war, almost everyone has to study it at some point during their education. The one you've chosen seems to be what you're looking for. |
