K5 Touch Screensavers not working
Trying to get my daughters K5 Touch (without special offers) to run custom screensavers of her children, but it's been an epic fail. I JB the touch with Kubricks, that was super simple... but after that... I'm not sure where I went wrong. Followed the instructions per NiLuJe's page at https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=195474 installing both Python and linkss, updating after each bin file. Then I made triple sure I was using the right file formats, and correct 600X800 grayscale pics... and TA DA! Last page read now is the screensaver. Somehow... I'm pretty sure this wasn't what was supposed to happen. Rats. So, I uninstalled both of the updates... and nothing. No screensavers. Not even the default ones. Still just the last page read. The only thing I didn't uninstall was the Kubricks Jailbreak. I even tried to restore it, but I understand that didn't undo the jailbreak, but still no screensavers at all. So anyone have any clue as to what I did wrong?
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...97#post2727797 I did post one other thread in another area, but being new, I put it in the wrong forum and it was suggested to put one here. Thanks Last edited by wholycow; 01-03-2014 at 02:59 PM. Reason: adding first post to forum |

@wholycow-
Just to clarify: 1- Jailbreak 2- Sideload update_linkss_0.16.N_install_touch_pw.bin (not update_...._pw2.bin) 3- do 'update my kindle' via menu>settings>etc. No USB cord. 4- at this point you should get a screensaver saying that the hack worked (don't recall what it looks like). If you don't see this, then something is wrong with your install. If you get NiLuJe's default screensaver, all is working and go ahead and add your custom screensavers and then do a restart via menu>settings>etc without a USB cable. If things don't work at this point, it is probably a problem with your custom screensavers. Good luck! |

What Goharks said
![]() Specifically, the 'nothing happens' issue is usualy caused by the Kindle barfing on one of your image files (wrong format, resolution, size, alignment of the stars). Do make sure the update process is actually successful each time ![]() ![]() |

GoSharks,
I did the Python update first, then the second one you mentioned (and yeah, not the pw2), all the update restarts without the USB cord. I used Photoshop CS6 to convert the files to PNG formats, and then inserted them into the Screensavers folder. Was I supposed to put the Python update on there? Re-looking over the instructions, perhaps that was ONLY if you wanted the last page as your screensaver? NiLuJe, mmm... so if it's the wrong format, and I used Photoshop CS6, is there another program I should use? Is there different types of PNG files? Wondering now if I should just undo the jailbreak, and start all over from scratch... |

@wholycow-
Why don't you delete your custom screensavers from their folder and try doing the 'cover' option (last read book cover) just to see if the hack is working or if it is your custom screensavers causing the problem. You will need to have python installed for 'cover' to work. edit- if you are able to install any aspect of this hack, then your jailbreak is fine...leave it alone. Yep, a lot of ways to cook a PNG, and the Kindle is very picky... I don't have access to CS6, so I can't say whether its defaults are sane or not.

Okay, I just tried 3 other programs including one online that converted jpg files to png, and got the same results. Last screen shown. What about perhaps downgrading, re-jb the darn thing, then upgrade? Or is that even possible? It's about to become a coaster.

to make sure it's not a png format thing, try to use some already converted:
http://kindlewallpapers.tumblr.com/ and there are many others online. The jailbreak is fine if the covers is working, must be a simple issue. Keep trying! Re-read the screensaver README file - sometimes I miss stuff the 37th time and on the 38th time I say OOOOHHHHH ![]() |

Also, did you the "cover" file from the linkss folder? Could be that you didn't, and I think the system checks for "cover" before other config options.

@wholycow: There's a "reset to default behavior" button somewhere in the KUAL extensions, IIRC, that'll also make sure you don't have a broken config.
Like GoSharks said, you don't need to touch neither the FW version, nor the JB. If you want to start fresh, just uninstall the hack, remove the linkss folder manually, then reinstall the hack. And then stop, check that it works before doing anything else. If it does, and only starts to go crazy once you put your custom images, then, yep, it's definitely your images ![]() As a ref., something I *know* generates proper PNG files is ImageMagick, since this is what the cover mode uses (cf. #837). @brianinmaine: Nope. Most of those are JPG, which, nope, won't work on FW 5.x ![]() Last edited by NiLuJe; 01-04-2014 at 12:10 PM. |

Okay, upon looking at the files IN the Kindle, in the main window of files, we have several, .active_content_sandbox, audible, documents, extensions, linkss, music, screensavers, system and tts. When I open linkss, there is a second screensavers file. Should there be 2? Which one should I be using? tried using another screensaver from the net specifically for the Kindle, without luck, but that was before I discovered this second screensaver file.
I will give imagemagick a try. |

Another thing I just found, which may or may not have anything to do with this, in the linkss file, and in the cover_cache file, there are 4 png files, default, default -pw, overlay and overlay-pw. Also in linkss > backups, there are 20 original png files, but I don't know where they were backed up from, but they are all the default files.
I just dropped those 20 back up files into first one then the other screensaver folder and restarted the kindle with no luck. |

Yay! Uninstalled everything, then removed that linkss file and reapplied the hack... and all is grand in the world of custom screensavers! NaJuLe, you da wiz!

Mmh, yep, that screensavers folder in the root folder? Probably not intended to be here. What was in it?
The one the hack cares about is indeed linkss/screensavers @GoSharks: Yup. To avoid destroying user content (custom screensavers/fonts/configs), by default the uninstall process doesn't remove anything from the userstore. Which is nice, but indeed confusing when the issue stems from something the user did in it ;p. |
