Editor To Do list
Kovid, I think the editor is already pretty much feature complete.
![]() So besides the usual bug fixing and the Editor plugin facility development you did mention before, I'm curious what extra basic functionality can we still expect in the near future, if any? |

Not sure if this is the right place to request this, but I would like to see a "Count All" in the Find and Replace section.

I dont like to comment about upcoming features, as they may or may not be implemented. But one basic feature that I am working on right now is a spell check.

Kovid did say he is writing tighter code now than when he started with Calibre. IMHO there are benefits of sticking with a language ![]() There is code that works. and there is code that work good. |

Language speed is typically a very small factor in overall speed. Using good data structures and algorithms is much more important.
That's how the new database backend is faster than the old, despite actually being thread safe, which involves overhead for locking. And it's why the editor is so fast. By using various, rather nifty tricks, I was able to make the editor fast. The basic idea is to do as little as possible and that, only when absolutely necessary. For example, Sigil parses all files when the book is first opened and renames them. There's absolutely no need to do that. Instead, calibre works with html even if it is not strictly valid. Another trick is that the parsing and fixing of html before displaying in the preview panel happens in a separate process, so it keeps the editor itself feeling responsive, while the heavy works happens on a different CPU core. Then the checkpoint feature, which is one I am personally very proud of uses hardlinks and copy-on-write so that there is no expensive file copying when creating a checkpoint and minimal use of disk space as well. The syntax highlighting is both powerful and fairly fast despite incurring the overhead of converting text from Qt's internal representation into python, because I wrote it from scratch, keeping in mind the particular needs and tradeoffs of this editor, rather than using a generic syntax highlighter, which would not have been so optimized. I really appreciate your using code that takes advantage of more than one core. Both computers here have more than 1 core and it's great to use them and not tie up 1 core to do everything!

I may have totally overlooked it, but I cannot seem to find an option for metadata editing in the Editor? Not there (yet)?

There is no metadata editor. Simply edit metadata in calibre and it will be updated when you open the book for editing automatically (unless you have disabled that under calibre integration in the editor preferences).

I don't seem to be able to open the metadata editor as standalone, so ... would it be possible to integrate it in the editor somehow? Or am I perhaps missing some point here??? Regards, Kim |

If you're set against using calibre's standard metadata editor for some reason, there's nothing to stop you editing metadata directly. It's all there in the .opf file, so just double-click on it in the Editor and edit away to your heart's content. It won't update your calibre library metadata for that book, of course, just the epub's metadata.
