Kindle collection syncing question
So...dh got me a Kindle Paperwhite (I guess 2?) for Christmas yesterday, and I tried to download some books and put them into collections. It made me turn wifi on first (I didn't know why until later). After I had put some books into collections, it appears that it had DOWNLOADED collections somehow from my old Kindle 4NT (including the contents of those collections that were Amazon books, but the books that were on my other Kindle but not the PW were grayed out). I had to go back and clean up the mess. But I wondered if it was going to sync the collection with my Kindle 4NT, but no, I connect4ed the K4NT to wifi and it appears that this is some sort of 1-way sync???
So..question--If I move a book out of the "unread" collection once I read it on my Kindle 4NT, I assume it will move out of it on the PW as well? But if I move it out of the collection on the Kindle PW, it won't move it out on the K4NT? Why doesn't it work both ways? Will the K4NT move it back into "unread" on the PW since it doesn't move out there? And why the grayed out stuff? On the one hand, I guess if I ever want to download any of those books it would make it easier, but one reason I didn't download a lot onto the new device was because that at about 900 books the old device was getting slow and needed occasionally to be rebooted. How are sideloaded books handled with this? I have read a little on this board about how the PW collections work but not how they work with the older Kindles. Thanks. Additional thoughts and bitching welcome ![]() |

Also has anyone else had problems with the Kindle Paperwhite not automatically downloading titles? I now have the new one set up as the default device and it wasn't delivering new books to it. So I went into the library and hit "deliver to" the Paperwhite, then attempted to sync and got "no new items." Did this 3 or 4 times with new and old books. I can use the device to go to the cloud and download new items that way, but that kind of stinks because I rely (or used to rely! with my K4NT) on the kindle to know what I have new at any time.

That is an interesting question. For me Collections sync to and from the PW 2012, the PW 2013 and the HDX 2013. They do not sync to the Kindle 4 PC and must be set up separately. The HD 2012 does not have Collections at all.
Collection CONTENTS sync to and from the PW 2013 and HDX 2013. Collection Contents do not sync at all to the PW 2012 and must be separately added and deleted. The K4NT may handle Collections similarly to the PW 2012. Collections do not seem to be uniformly implemented to all the devices and apps. With WiFi on tap Cloud and use a long hold to download an eBook. If it shows in a Collection greyed out, one can use a long hold to download it there. You can go into Manage you Devices on the internet & Turn the Sync OFF.
No sideloaded ebooks are not going to sync just ones on you amazon account. |

I don't mind the sync, but I do want to understand how it works between the devices.
Also, I have resolved the not-delivering problem by renaming and reregistering the device. I guess it got confused earlier? I'll be keeping an eye on it. |

I have 3 Paperwhites, 2 old ones and one new one. The update to the new one's firmware changed the collections the way you described and it was a pain for me. I had things set up the way I liked them already.
I talked to Kindle support and they suggested that I delete the collections on all of the devices and make new collections with slightly different names on each. So I deleted them. I renamed the Kindles at Amazon to A_PW, B_PW and C_PW. Then I created collections _A_Books, _B_Books, and so on. And the same for my other collections. Now it doesn't try to synch my collections with anything and it works just like it used to. Problem solved. I realize this isn't a direct answer to your question but I thought it might be useful information. Barry |

Thanks for the suggestion. I may just do that with the "unread" one on my old Kindle so that it doesn't affect the new one (the idea of reclassifying 900 or so books isn't appealing, but the "unread" collection on the old one is substantially smaller).

From what I've read on Amazon's help, it seems that I automatically *imported* collections when I tried to use it and it won't try to further sync with my K4NT. I guess that is what I want. I have no idea how I'm going to use the devices together, only that the PW2 is the go-to device now because it's new and enables reading with the light out

Collection Labels and Contents sync differently.

The PW 2013 has Collection Labels and Contents syncing and that is the same with the HDX 2013. |

PW 2012 will import collections from another device. But if you don't have the collection items on the device when you do the import, they won't get placed into the collections. They do not sync with anything, once imported they are 'owned' by that Kindle.

Thanks for the clarification, perhaps the pw 2012 will eventually get the cloud collections. too bad they turned it off for k4pc, though I am a little annoyed it works for android but not k4pc.
