Free e-books? Where????
Hi Everyone,
I'm new on these boards and I just got my first e-reader this weekend - Kobo Glo. I have a question though and I can't find an answer on any internet site. I was told we can download FREE e-books. Well so far every site I have visited for downloading ebooks does say 'Free' e-books, but each book has a price underneath. Some as low as .99 cents up to $10.00 and more. That's not Free! I also tried through my library, where one can download for free, but there's waiting lists of people ahead of me and we only have 3 days to read the e-books. So any sites were I can actually download a free ebook, no charge at all??? Any help would be appreciated ![]() |

go here:
https://www.mobileread.com/ There's a menu at the top called "ebooks" Click on that and there's various menu options for different types of free ebooks. For example to view free epub ebooks, select EPUB and it'll take you here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/ebooks.php?forumid=130 |

Rebecca I believe you're misunderstanding how borrowing from libraries works. Yes, popular books will have a waitlist just like borrowing a hard copy book. That's normal and to be expected with popular books. But you don't have only 3 days to read the book. You have 3 days from when you receive the email to download the book you've waited for. If you don't sign into your local library to download it then the book will go to the next person on the list.
Once you download it to your reader you have anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks to read it. It depends on what your library offers and what you've selected. You will get free classics books or books out of copyright on many sites. Popular, current, still in copyright books have to be purchased or borrowed from the library. Anywhere offering you free books that are current/popular/newly released are what is referred to as torrent copies. [not legal] |

You have a number of options. The library is the main source for current titles. See Shopaloic's comments on borrowing times. You can also check the author's and publisher's websites, since they may be giving away promotional copies. (A few authors even give away their books, depending upon other forms of revenue.)
Kobo's shop also offers free books, some being promotional and some being public domain. MobileRead and Project Gutenberg also offers free books, of the public domain variety. If you want to try searching for books from other sources, use terms like: "public domain" or "creative commons" in place of the word "free". |

Www.feedbooks.com has a public domain section, which provides over 3500 free e-books.
Those are all out-of-copyright classics, of course. Most bestsellers need to be purshased, although sometimes they are given away for free for a short time, as promotion. Stick around. You'll find out a lot of this stuff by following the Reading Recommendations here. |

Many authors offer the first book in a series free, or at a deep discount, to hook new readers. You do have to look.
There is a Forum right here on MobileRead specifically set up to alert fellow members to good deals: "Deals, Freebies, and Resources". Many are for a limited time, so you have to move. I notice that this is your first post -- have you checked it out yet? |

If you like SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY the BAEN FREE LIBRARY offers some contemporary legally free titles and the FIFTH IMPERIUM website legally hosts a couple dozen images fle of BAEN promotional CDs spotlighting some of their best authors and series. A hundred books and more. Even if you don't follow SF&F you'll find a couple of series that are mostly straight adventure. Their new and recent releases sell at reasonable prices.

Almost any ebook store lets you sort their books by price. If you sort from lowest to highest, the free ones will be listed for you.

For Kindle books http://www.ereaderiq.com/freebies/ also go to amazon.com then to kindle store and sort by price low to high and the freebies will be listed. Do watch as a .99 cent one sneeks into the free list now and then.
Also if you have a title, just google title followed by ebook and you may well find it with a little looking. |

A serious question: why do so many people write ".99c" when they actually mean "99c"? |
