ToC not working on Aura HD, ok on PC
I'm using Calibre (currently v1.14 running on Linux) to manage my library and send books to my Aura HD (currently running 3.10 FW). I have one ePub (George Passant, one of the Strangers and Brothers novels by C P Snow, published by Stratus), where the ToC works fine when I open the epub on the PC in the ebook viewer, but making a ToC selection on the Aura doesn't move that that location in the book. ToCs on other ePubs on the Aura work fine. I'm wondering if the length of the ToC has anything to do with it, as this book has the longest ToC of any of the ebooks I have - it contains 53 items and runs to five screens on the Aura HD with a fairly small font size.
If I connect the Aura to the PC and use the file manager to navigate to the copy of the book on the reader, and open that copy in the ebook viewer, the ToC works fine, but when viewed using the ereader itself the ToC is non-functional. This would seem to point the finger at some flaw in the Kobo software on the reader. I power-cycled the reader as well, but that made no difference. |

With a ToC of 53 entries and 5 pages, it is still fairly short. I have a book somewhere that has about 30 pages.
![]() I can think of two reasons for this behaviour. It is possible there are errors in the TOC. Opening a book in the calibre viewer (I think that's what you are using on the computer) is not a good test for errors in the book.It is actually doing a conversion to a common format and fixes some things while doing this. This common format is almost the epubs standard, and it means that even for epubs it will fix some things. Opening the epub in ADE is likely to show any errors. Running epubcheck or opening in Sigil and using its check should show if there are TOC errors. If this is the case, you can fix it with a conversion in calibre, using the TOC tool or in Sigil. The other possibility is if you sent the book to the ereader, let the ereader processed it and then changed and resent. When the Kobo ereaders first see a book, they process them and put details in the internal database. This includes the TOC which is then used for navigation. You can replace the book successfully, but the book is not reprocessed. If the structure of the book, or the TOC changes, this is not picked up and they will be out of sync. The only thing you can do is delete the book and send it again. If you would like, I can take a look at the book. If it is available somewhere for free download, post the link. Otherwise, send me a PM with a link I can get it from or to get an email address you can send it to. |

Calibre also has a really powerful and extremely user friendly tool to create, check and modify ToCs. It puts red warnings on invalid entries. Give it a try with your conflictive book.

I would agree that 53 items over 5 screens is not that large a ToC. I've seen much longer ToCs especially in omnibus books. Regards, David |

In the end what I did was (from within Calibre) delete the book from the reader and send it again from the library. ToC now works on the reader.
